Scientologists may be facing their most daunting court case yet, and all it took was for someone to stop calling them a cult. After a years long legal battle, federal prosecutors in?Belgium now believe their investigation is complete enough to charge the Church of Scientology and its leaders as a criminal organization on charges of extortion, fraud, privacy breaches, and the illegal practice of medicine. "The decision follows years of investigation that was triggered by a complaint by the Labour Mediation Service in the Brussels Region. ...

We recently had the chance to spend time with David Greaves and Vesa-Matti Hartikainen of Jolla and take Sailfish OS for a spin. As you might recall, this open source mobile OS builds upon Mer (a fork of MeeGo that includes Qt) and uses the Nemo framework with a custom UI. Like any decent Linux-based OS, it supports both ARM and x86 devices. The company is also behind the Sailfish SDK which is in the process of being finalized but is still open to developer feedback (the source code is available). After seeing Jolla's various demo videos and noting some UI similarities with MeeGo (swipes) and strangely, with BB10 (peek gestures) we were eager to experience Sailfish OS for ourselves. If you're wondering why the mobile OS is usually shown running on Nokia's N950 developer handset, that's because Jolla employs many ex-MeeGo engineers, so the OMAP-based phone was a natural fit. We were first given a walkthrough of Sailfish OS, then allowed to play with it. Many apps are still being worked on (and some are still off-limits: we got in trouble for launching the camera), but what we saw was pretty solid. Take a look at the gallery below, then hit the break for our hands-on video and first impressions.

Terry reveals her refrigerator of horrors on "Hoarders."
By Ree Hines, TODAY contributor
After so many tragic tales of waste-filled homes, animal deaths and human suffering on A&E's "Hoarders," it's hard to imagine finding anything on the show truly shocking anymore. Well, it was hard to imagine that before Monday night's episode, which featured a woman whose cat obsession went beyond anything viewers of the docu-series had seen before.
As the episode opened, hoarder Terry explained what inspired her feline fascination.
"I really feel like the reason I collect cats is that I have this feeling in me that I'm helping save something," she said.
A glance around her living space soon proved that Terry wasn't saving cats or herself the way she was living. Floors and counters were covered in excrement and sick animals crawled over the scene.
"The complete number is probably about 50 cats," she guessed.
But that low-estimate only included the living cats, and the dead ones outnumbered them by far.
"I probably have, in frozen and refrigerated cats, between 75 and 100 -- if not more," Terry said.
Terry had hoped to have them all cremated, but finances didn't allow for that, so over time, she "saved" them all in the appliance, which wasn't up to the task of preserving the cats. In fact, once the cleanup was underway, the "Hoarders" crew discovered that many of the cats had liquefied.
A&E
Cat excrement covered nearly ever surface of Terry's home.
The removal process was difficult for Terry who broke down many times and finally seemed to see her hoarding problem as others viewed it.
"I can't even say anymore that I love animals 'cause I treated them so horrible," she said through tears.
By the end of the show, most of the mess and all of the cats were out of the home.
If you want to see the episode for yourself -- and be forewarned, the feline footage gets far more graphic than the photos above -- it's available to view online at the A&E website.

LEOs Eats with Robin Garr
When Tony Palombino opened AP Crafters over the smoking remains of the short-lived Indigo Joe?s in Westport Village a year ago last spring, I couldn?t help wonder what the guy who might rank as Louisville?s most innovative entrepreneur of good eats was up to now.
AP Crafters? Vegetable Napoleon.
After all, Palombino is the guy who built Tony Boombozz from a tiny pizzeria into a local chain of pizza-and-brew houses more than 15 years ago, while spinning off and incubating one new restaurant idea after another. Thatsa Wrapp, Benny B?s, Bazo?s ? some flared then fizzled, while others have become local standards. Just last month, Palombino opened another new concept, Manny & Merle, in the Whiskey Row neighborhood, a hearty Bakersfield-style mix of Latino and Anglo food and music. I?ll head over there one of these days, but first, let?s see what?s going on at AP Crafters.Anchoring a corner of the Westport Village shopping center, AP Crafters mirrors the evolution of Westport Village, a modern remake of the old Camelot center that has thrived on a base of local restaurants and indie businesses that make an attractive commercial magnet for its suburban neighborhood. AP Crafters fits right in, taking the place of a franchised sports-bar concept with 47 units in 10 states. Never mind that it seemed to cover much of the same sports bar ground as had Indigo Joe?s; there was a familiar face at the helm and clubby dark-wood paneling and antiques, and it was all good.
They called it a ?gastropub,? which is OK, I guess, as this is a malleable term, although when I hear that trendy buzzword I think of something more like Butchertown?s estimable Blind Pig, which at first glance didn?t seem to have a lot in common with AP Crafters except for a very good beer list.
But AP Crafters is evolving, and during a leisurely dinner visit the other night, I was delighted to discover that, while it still executes pub grub very nicely, the place has also developed a more upscale persona featuring serious, well-executed entrees such as you might expect at a more trendy bistro on Bardstown Road or Frankfort Avenue or NuLu?s urban streets.
The menu begins, as it has from the start, with a good selection of soups, salads and munchies, offering a broad choice among healthy green salads ($7-$8) and delicious fatty and salty goodies, including charred wings ($8) or a platter of crisp beer-battered fried pickle chips with ancho dipping sauce ($7). Those who choose the gastropub route may be infatuated with a charcuterie plate ($11, and none dare call it ?cold cuts?) or the chef?s weekly selection of hummus and olives with pita ? whole wheat, of course.
Sandwiches, served with your choice of seasoned fries, slaw or fruit, are mostly $8 (for a griddled cheese sandwich, with 75-cent upcharges for tomato or bacon), to $11 (for a grilled chicken BLT). Burgers include a fancy Reuben burger ($11), a burger topped with pastrami, kraut and Swiss atop your all-beef patty. Or they?ll hold the patty on request and make it a plain Reuben. Another option: Schmear your burger with beer cheese, bacon and onions and serve it on a pretzel roll ($11). If a more traditional burger is your style, go for the Build Your Own option, which does burgers the way Boombozz does pizza: Start with the basic dressed patty ($7.50), then make it your own with a smorgasbord of toppings at 75 cents each: cheese, bacon, an egg, onions, sauce ? just about anything but the proverbial kitchen sink.
More and more, though, diners are flocking to AP Crafters for the entrees, a short but interesting list of nine items from $10 (for chorizo and pulled-pork tacos or fish tacos) to $28 (for blackened beef filet medallions with blue cheese Mornay).
Twenty craft beers on tap plus shorter selections of bottled domestics for those who insist give Crafters a brewpub feel; there?s also a short but well chosen wine list and a good mix of creative cocktails.
We went with a group and enjoyed sharing bites, and not one of us uttered a discouraging word about crisp retro iceberg wedges loaded with blue cheese and BLT toppings ($8); bacon bruschetta ($7), toasted baguette rounds spread with bacon jam, caramelized onions, sun-dried tomatoes, arugula and more; or a tasty side bowl of broccoli florets ($3.50) flavored with garlic and Parmesan.
A trio of fish tacos ($10), served Baja-style with blackened fish, also drew praise, as did the bistro-style braised lamb shank ($22), long-simmered and very tender, served on a succulent slab of potatoes au gratin. Perhaps our favorite entrees were the smoked pork chop ($18), a good-size chop, bone-on, juicy and tender and very flavorful, coated with a tart-sweet sun-dried tomato-basil demiglace atop a rich pool of creamy, cheesy polenta; and the fire-roasted vegetable napoleon ($14), an artful stack of roasted veggie-polenta cakes sandwiched with fresh arugula, tomatoes, chunks of zucchini and mild goat cheese.
Dinner for two, with a couple Crafters-brand microbrews, came to a reasonable $58.28 plus tip.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Many executives say they're anxious about the U.S. fiscal cliff negotiations, but Dow Chemical Co's chief executive says he's more bothered by the messy Chinese leadership transition, which he believes is wreaking greater harm on global markets. "Markets have, in a holistic sense, really been suffering more from China's slowdown than any slowdown here in the United States," Andrew Liveris said during the company's investor day in New York on Monday. ...

Voyager 1 is going, going ? not quite gone.
The well-traveled NASA spacecraft, launched in 1977, is headed out of the heliosphere, the fluctuating bubble in space inflated by plasma streaming outward from the sun. For years Voyager 1 has been closing in on the heliopause?the outer edge of the heliosphere?where the solar wind meets the interstellar medium. But despite intriguing hints to the contrary, the probe remains within the heliosphere, mission scientists have announced. Rather than making an unprecedented crossing into the interstellar medium, it appears that Voyager 1 has discovered yet another wrinkle in the structure of our local space environment, a sort of magnetic highway linking the heliosphere to what lies beyond.
?Voyager has discovered a new region of the heliosphere that we had not realized was there,? Voyager project scientist Ed Stone of the California Institute of Technology said in a December 3 teleconference. ?We?re still inside, apparently. But the magnetic field now is connected to the outside. So it?s like a highway letting particles in and out.?
Voyager 1 crossed into the new region in August, suddenly registering a huge drop in the number of low-speed solar particles in its environment and a corresponding jump in the number of higher-energy cosmic-ray particles arriving from outside the solar system. ?It is as if someone opened the floodgates and the water all moved down the river,? said Tom Krimigis of the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory. ?Also some boaters traveling upstream at close to the speed of light have been able to get in at last.?
Data from Voyager 1 show an abrupt drop in solar ions (top) at the same time that the spacecraft detected an increased number of cosmic rays (bottom) from interstellar space. Credit: NASA/JPL-Caltech/GSFC
Despite the sudden influx of cosmic-ray particles, the team concluded that Voyager 1 is still inside the heliosphere because the probe?s magnetometer has not yet registered a change in magnetic field direction, as would be expected when crossing the boundary from the sun?s plasma to the interstellar medium. ?If we had only looked at particle data alone, we would have said, ?Well, we are out. Goodbye to the solar system,?? Krimigis said. ?But nature is very imaginative, and Lucy pulled up the football again.?
Voyager 1 is now 18.3 billion kilometers from the sun, farther out than any man-made object has ever traveled. It is so distant that it takes radio signals 34 hours to make the round-trip (to send a command, for instance, and then receive confirmation that the command was accepted) from Earth to Voyager and back again. Still, no one knows how much farther Voyager 1 may have to travel before it breaches the heliopause and enters the interstellar medium. ?It may take several more months, it may take several more years,? Stone said.

Tumblr users can breathe easily once again following a few terrifying hours on Monday, during which accounts on the blog network were hijacked if?users happened to visit the wrong post. By 1:30 p.m. ET,?Tumblr reported that its engineers had resolved the issue.
Before Tumblr started cleaning up the problem, visiting the wrong post became increasingly easy to do. Sophos, an international Internet security firm, speculates that "the worm took advantage of Tumblr's reblogging feature, meaning that anyone who was logged into Tumblr would automatically reblog the infectious post if they visited one of the offending pages."
The worm-spreading?post in question began with the words "Dearest 'Tumblr' users," a Tumblr spokesperson told NBC News.?
Describing the infected?post,?the spokesperson advised,?"If you have viewed this post, please log out of all browsers that may be using Tumblr immediately."
"If you see something on your [Tumblr]?dashboard about emo kids and suicide and bleach, don?t click it," the Daily Dot's Kevin Morris wrote, referring to the post's?aggressively?offensive?contents.
The Verge's Adi Robertson, who saw his?tech site's Tumblr blog fall to the post's malicious effects, described the messages reposted by affected accounts as "exhortation for users to commit suicide."
If you happened to open up a version of this post?from your Dashboard or followed a link to it while logged into your Tumblr account, odds are that you were affected and helped the worm spread. A?"few thousand Tumblr blogs" were hijacked by the time the blog network resolved the issue, according to Tumblr.
If you stayed logged out of your Tumblr account while viewing an affected blog, it seems that you were safe. And, despite what the malicious post claimed, deleting any copies of it through the Tumblr mass editor seemingly fixed things for your account, according to BuzzFeed's?Ryan Broderick.
A spokesperson for the Daily Dot, another major site which was affected, explains that the hacking group believed to be behind the viral post is likely "responsible for several high-profile hoaxes in the past."?Gawker's Adrian Chen, after speaking to someone claiming to be a "the PR guy" for the hacker group allegedly behind the exploit, reported?that the group says it warned Tumblr about the vulnerability weeks ago.
"This was a serious issue that needed to be fixed," the individual reportedly?told Chen. "Someone would have done a lot worse than just posting a message over and over if they didn't fix it right away."?According to the same person, affected accounts weren't actually compromised???meaning that passwords remained safe. (This shouldn't stop you from changing your Tumblr password as a precaution, especially if you were affected.)

NOTABLES:
WILL MORTGAGE DEDUCTIONS FALL OFF THE CLIFF? ABC will take a look at a handful of specific revenue sources as fiscal-cliff talks continue, and today ABC's Shushannah Walshe reports on the home-mortgage deduction: The mortgage deduction has been fiercely guarded until now, although it costs the government over $100 billion a year by most estimates, because of the sentimental attachment to it and the idea that it helps middle class families afford homes. While those who benefit from the deduction, including homeowners and people in the real estate industry, are passionate about keeping the deduction in place, others say it should be eliminated because it overwhelmingly helps the wealthy and those who can afford to buy a home already. http://abcn.ws/SG8Gal
CABINET SHUFFLE - GEITHNER ON HIS REPLACEMENT: With Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner wrapping up his time in President Obama's cabinet, ABC's George Stephanopoulos asked him if banking executive Jamie Dimon - who has billionaire Warren Buffett's endorsement - should be named the next treasury secretary, but Geithner declined to answer directly. "The president's going choose somebody very talented to lead the Treasury for his next four years. And - I'm very fortunate I've been able to work with him to help solve these problems in the country over this period of time. And I'm very confident he's going have somebody in place - in January to succeed me," he said. http://abcn.ws/SDY0Jw
SEEKING ADELSON'S MILLIONS: Politico's Ken Vogel reports that the 2016 fundraising landscape is already taking shape: "A week after Election Day, three Republican governors mentioned as 2016 presidential candidates - Bobby Jindal, John Kasich and Bob McDonnell - each stopped by the Venetian Resort Hotel Casino to meet privately with its owner Sheldon Adelson, a man who could single-handedly underwrite their White House ambitions. Planning a presidential campaign used to mean having coffee with county party chairs in their Iowa or New Hampshire living rooms. The courting of Adelson, a full four years out from 2016, demonstrates how super PAC sugar daddies have become the new must-have feature for White House wannabes. ? Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley is meeting with big donors in Los Angeles this week and has a fundraiser scheduled for next Monday in the Washington suburbs. Vice President Joe Biden, Republican Texas Gov. Rick Perry and Sen. Mark Warner (D-Va.) have been meeting with big donors, leaving the impression that they're ready to run." http://politi.co/TCHafq
WHITE HOUSE WATCH: Here's what's on the president's agenda today, courtesy of ABC's Mary Bruce: This afternoon President Obama meets with Prime Minister Boyko Borissov of Bulgaria. Later, at 4 p.m. the president delivers on-camera remarks to the Nunn-Lugar Cooperative Threat Reduction symposium. On the 20th anniversary of the CTR program, the president will note the progress that's been made in securing nuclear material, and thank Senators Nunn and Lugar for their leadership on these issues, according to the White House.
THE NOTE:
After a week when both Republicans and Democrats dug in in their heels on the fiscal cliff negotiations, Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner told ABC's George Stephanopoulos that the ball is "absolutely" in the GOP's court.
"We think we have a very good plan, a very good mix of tax reforms that raise a modest amount of revenue on the wealthiest 2 percent of Americans, combined with very comprehensive, very well designed, very detailed savings that get us back to the point where our debt is stable and sustainable," Geithner said of the proposal he presented to Republican leaders on Capitol Hill last week in a "This Week" interview.
Only problem is, Republicans say the Obama administration's proposal is about as far away from a "good plan" as you can get.
"I would say we're nowhere. Period," House Speaker John Boehner said in an interview on "Fox News Sunday." "We've put a serious offer on the table by putting revenues up there to try to get this question resolved. But the White House has responded with virtually nothing." http://abcn.ws/VpplQj
So it may not be surprising that the GOP is considering what ABC's Jon Karl is calling a "Doomsday Plan" if fiscal cliff talks collapse entirely.
Here's Karl's latest reporting:
It's quite simple: House Republicans would allow a vote on extending the Bush middle class tax cuts (the bill passed in August by the Senate) and offer the president nothing more - no extension of the debt ceiling, nothing on unemployment, nothing on closing loopholes. Congress would recess for the holidays and the president would face a big battle early in the year over the debt ceiling.
Two senior Republican elected officials say this Doomsday Plan is becoming the most likely scenario. A top GOP House leadership aide confirms the plan is under consideration, but says Speaker Boehner has made no decision on whether to pursue it.
Under one variation of the plan, House Republicans would allow a vote on extending only the middle class tax cuts and Republicans, to express disapproval at the failure to extend all tax cuts, would vote "present" on the bill, allowing it to pass entirely on Democratic votes.
By doing this, Republicans avoid taking blame for tax increases on 98 percent of income tax payers. As one senior Republican in Congress told me, "You don't take a hostage you aren't willing to shoot." Republicans aren't willing to kill the middle class tax cuts, even if extending them alone will make it harder to later extend tax cuts on the wealthy.
Still unclear under this plan is what would happen to the automatic defense cuts - "sequestration" - scheduled to go into effect on January 1 without a deficit deal. During the campaign, the President promised the cuts would not happen. As part of the deal to allow the House vote on taxes, those automatic defense cuts could be put off for a year.
Watch Karl's "Good Morning America" report: http://abcn.ws/R0Y60R
PREDICTIONS:
-TIM GEITHNER ON 'THIS WEEK': "I actually think that we're going get there. I mean, you know, just inevitably going be a little political theater in this context," Geithner said, when asked whether Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell laughed after hearing President Obama's plan to avert the fiscal cliff. "Sometimes that's a sign of progress. Think we're actually making a little bit of progress, but we're still some distance apart."
-SEN. LINDSEY GRAHAM: "I think we're going over the cliff," South Carolina Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham said on CBS's ""Face the Nation." On the Democrats' proposal: "This offer doesn't remotely deal with entitlement reform in a way to save Medicare and Medicaid and Social Security from imminent bankruptcy. It raises $1.6 trillion on job creators that will destroy the economy, and there were no spending controls."
"THIS WEEK" REWIND:
-GEITHNER: SOCIAL SECURITY OFF THE TABLE IN THESE TALKS. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner also told ABC's George Stephanopoulos that, while Social Security may need reforms, they shouldn't be part of the fiscal-cliff discussion. Geithner: "What the president is willing to do is work with Democrats and Republicans to strengthen Social Security for future generations. ? But we think you have to do that in a separate process, so that our seniors aren't-don't face the concern that we're somehow going to find savings in Social Security benefits to help reduce the other deficits. ? We are prepared to, in a separate process, look at how to strengthen Social Security, but not as part of a process to reduce the other deficits the country faces." WATCH: http://abcn.ws/YpFVFc
-COLE: REPUBLICANS DON'T NEED TO OFFER A PLAN YET. Rep. Tom Cole, who broke ranks with his party last week by suggesting House Republicans follow President Obama's proposal to immediately extend only lower-income tax rates, appeared on ABC's "This Week" roundtable, saying his party doesn't need a specific fiscal-cliff plan just yet. Cole: I don't think we need to put a formal proposal out on the table. The speaker has already said revenue is on the table. He has got an idea about how to get there in terms of not raises rates, but finding it in other ways through tax code reform. I think that makes a lot of sense, and that's a doable thing, but beyond that, you know, we'll wait and see how the negotiations go." WATCH: http://abcn.ws/YpHjYD
PRAISE FOR JAKE TAPPER'S 'THE OUTPOST.' With Republicans and Democrats divided on the fiscal cliff negotiations, one thing both sides seem to agree on is Jake Tapper's book, "The Outpost: An Untold Story of American Valor. (As a refresher, in the book Tapper explores one of the deadliest attacks in Afghanistan - the attack on Combat Outpost Keating by Taliban insurgents on the morning of October 3, 2009. Tapper's expos? closely examines the history of the camp and the heroic stories of these American soldiers and their families through first person accounts, photographs and extensive research.) http://www.tinyurl.com/OutpostBandN MSNBC's Rachel Maddow called it a "?very readable, very impressive, well reported book." Fox News' Sean Hannity said "?I love the book. And it's really terrific. Very well researched. You went to Afghanistan, you talked to all these guys, 250 people. And it's really well done."

with ABC's Chris Good ( @c_good)
A TOUGHER POTUS. Comparing the president's fiscal-cliff posturing to his past methods in fiscal negotiation, The New York Times' Peter Baker writes: "His approach is born of painful experience. In his first four years in office, Mr. Obama has repeatedly offered what he considered compromises on stimulus spending, health care and deficit reduction to Republicans, who either rejected them as inadequate or pocketed them and insisted on more. Republicans argued that Mr. Obama never made serious efforts at compromise and instead lectured them about what they ought to want rather than listening to what they did want." http://nyti.ms/TD6guO
OBAMA: GOP HOLDING TAX-CUTS 'HOSTAGE.' In his weekly radio address on Saturday, President Obama warned that it's "unacceptable for some Republicans in Congress to hold middle class tax cuts hostage simply because they refuse to let tax rates go up on the wealthiest Americans," ABC's Mary Bruce reports. http://abcn.ws/TGPIiu
THE CLIFF SKEPTICS. Bloomberg's Julie Hirschfield Davis reports: "[A] small and potentially influential group of lawmakers in both parties is emerging as fiscal-cliff skeptics, willing-and some even arguing-to take the dive. ? Senator Patty Murray of Washington, the fourth-ranking Democrat in the leadership, said her side is willing to push the debate into 2013 if Republicans refuse to raise taxes on high earners as part of the deal. ? The doubters' caucus remains small, as most lawmakers are urging Republican leaders and Obama to reach an agreement and avoid sending yet another shock to the fragile economic recovery." http://bloom.bg/UBDag0
WHY GROVER NORQUIST STILL CONTROLS THE GOP. The Washington Post's Peter Wallsten reports: "Sen. Saxby Chambliss (R-Ga.), for example, might have seemed a perfect illustration of the trend away from Norquist's hard-line views when he said recently that policies backed by Norquist would lead to more debt. ? But five days later, on the phone with Norquist, Chambliss was sounding a conciliatory tone. As Norquist read aloud a transcript of Chambliss's earlier remarks, item by item, Norquist recalled later, the senator repeatedly assured him on each one that he did not mean to imply they had major differences when it came to GOP principles on taxes. 'He said he'd wished he hadn't invoked my name and wished that he'd been clearer,' Norquist recalled from the Monday conversation." http://wapo.st/UkdS3D
J.C. WATTS FOR RNC CHAIR? With the Republican National Committee set to vote whether to retain chairman Reince Priebus in January, Politico's John Bresnahan reports: Former GOP Rep. J.C. Watts says he is being "encouraged" by supporters to run for chairman of the Republican National Committee, a move he says could broaden the party's appeal to minorities. Watts is not formally entering the race, and he is not critical of current RNC Chairman Reince Priebus, who has already announced he will second term in the post." http://politi.co/VfWbRu
MORE ON ADELSON'S MILLIONS: WHAT HE SPENT ON 2012. How much did billionaire casino magnate Sheldon Adelson, a megadonor to GOP super PACs, spend trying to defeat President Obama in 2012? Peter H. Stone reports at Huffington Post: "Sheldon Adelson vowed to spend as much as $100 million to defeat President Barack Obama and help the GOP take control of Congress. According to two GOP fundraisers with close ties to the Las Vegas billionaire, he made good on that promise - and then some. Adelson ultimately upped the ante, spending closer to a previously unreported $150 million, the fundraisers said." http://huff.to/TD1w8g
WOMEN IN POWER: TOP STATES. ABC's Jilian Fama reports: This year, 1,773 women will be taking the oath of office to serve in their states' legislative bodies. In January, after they are sworn in, women will make up 24 percent of all state legislatures - and the number may grow because four state legislative races with at least one female candidate in the running remain undecided. Colorado is leading the pack with the highest percentage of female legislators serving. In 2013, Colorado will have 41.5 percent state House representatives who are female (27 female out of 65 total) and 40 percent state Senate members (14 out of 35). Thirty are Democrats and 11 are Republican. Other states leading in female representation are Vermont, Arizona and Hawaii. http://abcn.ws/QBDVFn
SECOND TIME'S THE CHARM FOR CONGRESSIONAL HOPEFULS? "Running for Congress? The second time might be the charm," Roll Call's Shira Toeplitz reports. "Just ask recent victors such as Reps.-elect Garland "Andy" Barr IV, R-Ky., Ami Bera, D-Calif., and Ann McLane Kuster, D-N.H. They defeated their respective opponents on the second try. There will be an entirely new landscape in 2014, and some November losers believe they might have a better shot in two years. If history is precedent, the midterm elections will provide more opportunities for the party not occupying the White House: Republicans. What's more, in two years, many Democrats won't be able to count on the boost of the president's effective turnout operation. Accordingly, more GOP losers than Democratic candidates are already mulling comeback bids for certain seats. But there are opportunities for Democrats in 2014 as well. Republicans controlled redistricting in most key states during the decennial mapmaking process. The GOP didn't release maps until late in the cycle, forcing last-minute campaigns for otherwise competitive seats." Read Roll Call's list of possible "two-timers": http://bit.ly/R0Si7P
OBAMA HOSTS KENNEDY CENTER HONOREES AT WHITE HOUSE. ABC's Matthew Larotonda reports on the black-tie event: Seven entertainment icons were hosted at the White House today for their contributions to the performing arts. Actor Dustin Hoffman, blues guitarist Buddy Guy, ballerina Natalia Makarova, and comedian David Letterman were given a reception with the three surviving members of Led Zeppelin before the annual Kennedy Center Honors gala this evening. President Obama welcomed the performers before they were presented their awards at the event later in the evening. The president joked that the motley crew's presence continued "a tradition at the White house by honoring some extraordinary people with no business being on the same stage together." http://abcn.ws/SrHXyD

CONSTITUTION WAITS FOR NO MAN'S INAUGURATION. Thanks to a calendar quirk, President Obama's second inauguration will come in two parts, ABC's Ann Compton reports: [T]he traditional parade with its bands and floats will not march on January 20th, the day the Constitution requires the President to be sworn in. That falls on a Sunday this time so by tradition there will only be a small Sunday ceremony for the oath-taking at noon. This calendar clash happens every few decades. For Ronald Reagan's second swearing in in 1985, a brief ceremony was held in the Grand Foyer on the state floor of the White House at 12 noon on Jan. 20, with a group of invited guests. It was televised live. But the parties and parades had to wait 24 hours. http://abcn.ws/RwauG7
OBAMA PLAYS GOLF WITH CLINTON. President Obama sought Bill Clinton's help the last time the Bush tax cuts were set to expire, huddle with the former president at the White House and ultimately handing him the podium at a press briefing in December 2010. ABC's Matthew Larotonda reports, Obama played golf with Clinton, U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk, and former Clinton aide/current Virginia gubernatorial candidate Terry McAuliffe yesterday.

-MOVE ON MEMBERS CHIP IN TO PUT ELIZABETH WARREN IN SENATE BANKING POST. MoveOn.org members have contributed nearly $150,000 since last Wednesday Nov. 28 to stop the banking lobby's attempts to keep Elizabeth Warren off the Senate Banking Committee, according to a spokesperson for the group. Members received an e-mail fundraising petition saying, "Elizabeth Warren hasn't even been sworn in yet. She hasn't hired most of her staff. And already Wall Street lobbyists are scrambling to cut her off at the knees by keeping her off the Senate Banking Committee. According to multiple sources, Wall Street 'has been going nuts' to keep her off the committee.1 And it's not hard to see why. She's an expert on the issues. She has no conflicts of interest. She's PERFECT." Move On plans to use the money raised from what they are calling the "emergency campaign" to rally their members and run ads in support of Warren. Notably, Move On members raised more than $1 million to help elect her, the group said.

Peter Krauth:?This past March, I asked a highly successful investment advisor what he thought about gold. Since he deals almost exclusively with very high net-worth individuals, his point of view was especially intriguing.
He confided to me that many of his clients had been asking for gold and gold-related investments over the past few years. I can?t say that I was surprised.
But what he told me next simply shocked me.
CLICK HERE to get your Free E-Book, ?Why It?s Curtains for the Euro?
?Gold?s much too volatile, it?s too risky?, he said. ?Sure it?s up, but I try to discourage my clients from investing in it.?
It simply floored me that he thought gold was too volatile. Gold is only up 580% since it bottomed in 2001, without a single losing year to date.
That?s not something you can say about the stock market or any other type of investment.
I can hardly imagine what he must think of silver, as?silver prices?are up by 725% since 2001.
Today, silver is trading around $34, but our 2013?silver price?forecast now has the shiny metal going much, much higher.
What will power that rise?
Since it?s slaved to its richer cousin, all the fundamentals for higher gold would apply.
I wrote about them yesterday in my?2013 gold price forecast.
As history has shown, silver moves almost in sync with gold, but exaggerates its movements, both on the up?anddown sides. That?s why I like to think of silver as ?gold on steroids?.
2013 Silver Price Forecast
For 2013 I think silver, like gold, will set a new all-time nominal price record, likely reaching as high as $54 an ounce.
Despite silver?s dependency on gold, it does have some distinct fundamentals, too.
In fact, here are my key drivers for silver prices in 2013:
So for these reasons, as well as silver?s historical role as an inflation hedge/monetary asset, look for silver prices to keep rising in the years ahead.
That being said, 2013 is likely to be pivotal for the more affordable precious metal. Now that gold has set and surpassed its own all-time highs, look for silver to be next.
It now looks like $54 is the next price target in silver?s relentless and historic climb.

BRAZZAVILLE, Republic of Congo (AP) ? A Red Cross official says the death toll has risen to more than 25 people killed after an Ilyushin-76 cargo plane owned by a private Congolese company crashed near the airport in the Republic of Congo's capital.
Albert Mberi, secretary-general of the Red Cross in the Republic of Congo, said Saturday they had counted at least 25 people killed from the crash, including six Ukrainian crew members. Officials on Friday said at least three died. Mberi said several people were wounded and had been evacuated to the University Hospital in the capital, Brazzaville. Mberi said the death toll was provisional and could rise.
A state radio official put the death toll at 30.
The Republic of Congo is often overshadowed by its much larger neighbor, Congo ? the scene of numerous crashes involving aging Soviet planes.

Just in case you were wondering whatever happened to that delayed-by-lawsuit 10-disc Marvel Cinematic Universe: Phase One - Avengers Assembled Blu-ray set that captured a full series of the Disney / Marvel movies, Amazon is notifying pre-orderers (previously mollified with free The Avengers discs) of the new release date: April 2nd. While the original suitcase has been scrapped due to a licensing dispute with its designer, a recent post on Marvel's blog revealed the set will still come in a not-exactly-S.H.I.E.L.D. briefcase complete with glowing Tesseract inside. The movies, bonus content, art cases and all are still intact, however with the delay have come a few extras. Buyers can expect an early preview of Iron Man 3 and the Phase Two series of flicks, as well as prop replicas and never-before-seen extras from the earlier films. The bad news? The price appears to have gone up, flashing a $219 MSRP and current selling for $197 on Amazon. While you're thinking that over, check after the break for a clip from Thor that didn't make the theatrical cut.
[Thanks, Jason]

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) ? Iran's president appointed his divisive confidant to a high-profile post Saturday in a move widely viewed as an attempt to boost the close aide's profile ahead of his expected candidacy in next year's presidential elections.
Mahmoud Ahmadinejad named Esfandiar Rahim Mashaei the head of the secretariat of the Non-Aligned Movement, the bloc of developing nations that Iran took over the leadership of this year. The post raises Mashaei's political clout and gives him much-needed international experience.
Ahmadinejad cannot run in Iran's presidential elections in June because of term limits, and he is widely believed to be grooming Mashaei, whose daughter is married to the president's son, as his successor when he steps down in 2013.
The decision to promote Mashaei is seen as a challenge to Iran's powerful hardliners, and is likely to inflame the simmering political dispute with presidential elections on the horizon. The hardliners denounce Mashaei as the head of a "deviant current" that they say is trying to undermine the country's ruling Islamic system and elevate the values of pre-Islamic Persia and promote nationalism at the expense of clerical rule.
Mashaei is believed to have been at the root of a bitter political battle between Ahmadinejad and Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, over the choice of intelligence chief in 2011. The president boycotted Cabinet meetings for 11 days ? an unprecedented show of disrespect to Iran's leader, who hardliners believe is answerable only to God ? but finally backed down.
The challenge prompted many of Ahmadinejad's erstwhile conservative supporters to switch sides and join his opponents, thus weakening the powerbase of hardliners that the president depended on to secure his disputed re-election in 2009.
Ahmadinejad has paid dearly for challenging the ruling system. Dozens of the president's aides have been arrested or driven into the political margins. Hardline media also began to smear Mashaei, the president's protege, with some critics even claiming that Mashaei conjured black magic spells to fog Ahmadinejad's mind.
In his unusually long decree Saturday announcing Mashaei's appointment, Ahmadinejad employed an unusually flattering prose to praise his aide, calling him a "pious, patient man with a pure heart and crystal thoughts."
"I consider your excellency a competent, wise, honest man," Ahmadinejad said in a statement posted on his office's website. "Knowing and working with you is a divine gift and a great honor for me."
In contrast, Ahmadinejad released a very short separate statement to appoint Hasan Mousavi as Mashaei's successor to the post of the president's chief of staff.
Mashaei was at the heart of the dispute from the first day of Ahmadinejad's re-election in 2009 when the president appointed him as his first vice president. Khamenei quickly stepped in and pressured Ahmadinejad to drop the appointment, and Mashaei was gone within the week in a stinging embarrassment to the president.
Ahmadinejad has widely been quoted in Iranian media as privately saying that it would be an honor for him to serve as first vice president under Mashaei.
Even with the president's support, it is unclear whether Mashaei, if he chooses to run, will make it onto the presidential ballot. All candidates in the elections must be approved by the hardline Guardian Council, a body whose key members are handpicked by Khamenei.
Many conservatives say Mashaei will likely be barred from running but others believe it could be a tough challenge for the ruling system to disqualify him from the vote.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Senators pressed ahead Thursday on a new set of tough sanctions against Iran's domestic industries as they seek to cripple the Islamic republic's economy and thwart its nuclear ambitions.
Sens. Bob Menendez, D-N.J., and Mark Kirk, R-Ill., unveiled a package of penalties that would designate Iran's energy, port, shipping and ship-building sectors as entities of proliferation and sanction transactions with these areas. The legislation also would penalize individuals selling or supplying commodities such as graphite, aluminum and steel to Iran.
The punitive measures build on the sanctions on Tehran's oil industry that the two lawmakers have shepherded through Congress in the past year.
"Yes, our sanctions are having a significant impact, but Iran continues their work to develop nuclear weapons," Menendez said in a statement, adding that with the new penalties, "We will send a message to Iran that they can't just try to wait us out."
Kirk said the measure "will greatly increase the economic pressure on the Iranian regime and send a clear message of support to the Iranian people."
The sanctions are contained in an amendment the two lawmakers hope to add to a far-reaching defense policy bill that the Senate was debating and could wrap up by week's end. Congress has overwhelmingly backed previous efforts by Menendez and Kirk.
The legislation also would designate the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting and its president as human rights abusers for broadcasting forced televised confessions and show trials.
The United States and European Union have imposed tough sanctions on Iran that have weakened its economy. But Tehran has found ways to bypass the penalties, such as Turkey's use of gold to pay for Iranian natural gas imports.
The Menendez-Kirk measure would allow the president to impose sanctions in cases of the sale or transfer of precious metals, targeting efforts by Iran to circumvent the penalties.
Iran maintains that its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes only.
Mark Dubowitz, a sanctions expert and executive director of the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, said there is strong bipartisan support for intense sanctions, with the goal of pushing the Iranian economy to the brink of economic collapse.
Only then "can the central thesis of the administration's sanctions policy be fairly tested: That crippling economic pressure will break the nuclear will of Iran's supreme leader and his Revolutionary Guards and lead them to meet their obligations under international law," Dubowitz said.
The president has 90 days from the legislation's enactment to act. The bill does include the authority to waive the sanctions based on national security.

E-Commerce?is a very interesting way of building a business venture and attracting new consumers. It is basically the process of conducting business via electronic media, that is, through the Internet. It may seem easy to have a shop online, however, even online shops take time to set up and can be quite challenging to maintain.
However, sometimes, what is challenging is what brings on highly satisfactory results. Thus, setting up an?eCommerce?store is the first thing that you might want to tackle for your business.?
This is one of the most important aspects to prepare for while setting up an online shop. The design of the store must be extremely attractive and should make people literally want to visit ? and stay in ? the website. At the same time, it should be user-friendly as well, as once you increase customer traffic to your website, customers should be comfortable in making their way around it with ease.
Thus, while attractive graphics and moving images may look attractive, people with a slower internet connection may find it hard to load. And since most consumers may not have the patience to wait until it loads, they can very well switch to another website in the meantime.
Since consumers come to a website primarily to purchase products and view services, the display of those products and services should be clear and should open without a fuss. It should clearly state the price, the availability, if available in different?colors, the sizes, and a little product description.?
This section is important to focus on because consumers cannot feel or see the product and have to rely only on photographs and descriptions. The images should give an accurate indication of how the product would look like in real life.
The product gallery should also open in a comfortable and fast manner. There are ways to reduce the size of the photo without compromising on the quality. By the side, links to similar products can be displayed.?
It is important to?instill?the trust factor into your consumers. Owners of?eCommerce?websites must get the message across that they are not around to fleece them. So on the payment page, make sure the page is secure and the consumers are assured of this fact. Have all sorts of payment options available, such as credit card, debit card, net banking, and NEFT transfer of money, Cheque, PayPal, and even payment-on-delivery.
There must be a section that also clearly mentions the specifics, like the delivery time as well as warranty and guarantee period of the product. This is important so as to not have any sort of misunderstanding with the consumers.?
These are the ways to build an effective website design as well as make the space user-friendly. It?doesn?t?mean that adopting one idea makes you let go off the other. Both points are important in the success of online stores. Making a store user-friendly may prove to be an exhausting process, as every detail needs to be looked into carefully.
