Jazz fest announces stellar second wave

The latest batch of ticketed indoor concerts announced by the organizers of the Montreal International Jazz Festival is a stellar one indeed, but rock and pop fans will be dismayed to learn that three must-see concerts are in direct conflict. In other words, the full indoor lineup won't be announced for months, and painful decisions already have to be made.

The night of the big dilemma is July 3. Dr. John and Leon Russell (with tickets priced at $54 and $68) will take the stage at Th??tre Maisonneuve of Place des Arts at 8 p.m. That's a half hour after She & Him (the duo of Zooey Deschanel and M. Ward), with opening act Camera Obscura, ($45 and $55) kick off an evening of pop wonders at Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier in the same venue. And just to make the whole situation more agonizing, a powerhouse classic-soul double bill featuring Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings and James Hunter ($37) takes over Metropolis at 8:30 p.m.

Also confirmed are George Benson (June 30, Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier, $62, $76 and $92), the Joshua Redman Quartet and Strings (June 29, Maison symphonique de Montr?al, $50 and $60), Emilie-Claire Barlow (July 5, Th??tre Maisonneuve, $35 and $42), the Ravi Coltrane Quartet, supporting last year's excellent Spirit Fiction album (June 28, Th??tre Jean-Duceppe of Place des Arts, $37), the Preservation Hall Jazz Band (July 5, Th??tre Jean-Duceppe, $44), Woodkid, which is the side pop project of video director Yoann Lemoine (July 1, Metropolis, $33), Holly Cole (Th??tre du Nouveau Monde, June 27, 28 and 29, $45 and $55) and Montreal's sweetheart Nikki Yanofsky, who will be launching a new album (Th??tre du Nouveau Monde, July 4, 5 and 6, $45 and $55)

Tickets go on sale Saturday, Feb. 2, at noon. For Place des Arts and Maison symphonique shows, go to the Place des Arts box office, go online at pda.qc.ca or phone 514-842-2112. Tickets for Sharon Jones and Woodkid will be available at the Metropolis box office, online at admission.com or by phone at 514-790-1245. For the Th??tre du Nouveau Monde concerts, go to the box office, go to http://www.tnm.qc.ca or phone 514-866-8668.

Subscribers to Equipe Spectra's free newsletter get an early shot at tickets, with a pre-sale that starts now and ends Feb. 1 at 5 p.m. The Woodkid show, however, is excluded from this arrangement.

To subscribe and get further details, go to montrealjazzfest.com or phone 514-871-1881.

Tickets for Aretha Franklin, Wayne Shorter, Wynton Marsalis and Belle & Sebastian have been previously announced.

The 34th annual Montreal International Jazz Festival runs from June 28 to July 7.

Financial fears hit consumer confidence in Jan.

2 hrs.

Consumer confidence dropped in January to its lowest level in more than a year as Americans were more pessimistic about the economic outlook and their financial prospects, according to a private sector report released on Tuesday.?

The Conference Board, an industry group, said its index of consumer attitudes fell to 58.6 from an upwardly revised 66.7 in December, falling short of economists' expectations for 64. It was the lowest level since November 2011.?

The index for December was originally reported as 65.1.?

At the start of the year, U.S. politicians came to an agreement that averted the so-called fiscal cliff of spending cuts and tax increases that had been set to come into effect.?

But the deal did raise taxes for many Americans and a number of budget decisions still remain.?

"The increase in the payroll tax has undoubtedly dampened consumers' spirits and it may take a while for confidence to rebound and consumers to recover from their initial paycheck shock," Lynn Franco, director of economic indicators at The Conference Board, said in a statement.?

The expectations index tumbled to its lowest level since October 2011 at 59.5 from 68.1. The present situation index slipped to 57.3 from 64.6.?

Consumers' views on the labor market were also weaker. The "jobs hard to get" index rose for the first time since September to 37.7 from 36.1 the month before. The "jobs plentiful" index fell to 8.6 from 10.8.?

Consumers expected higher price increases with expectations for inflation in the coming 12 months rising to 5.7 percent from 5.6 percent.?

NAMM 2013 wrap-up: Analog synths, DJ gear, loads of MIDI, mobile peripherals and more

NAMM 2013 wrapup Analog synths, DJ gear, a MIDI guitar, mobile peripherals and more

We've managed to pull through music's deafening January gathering just outside of Los Angeles with our hearing still somewhat intact. The last few days have held a wealth of DJ gear from controllers and consoles to portable units. Both Moog and Korg trotted out new analog synthesizers that look quite formidable while remaining rather affordable. As expected, a truckload of wares to outfit a mobile device arsenal were on display from Bluetooth foot controllers to dual-input audio interfaces. And as always, a few surprises crept in as well -- like a MIDI guitar and fully portable, handheld DJ solution. Head on down past the break to get caught up on the happenings that you might've missed as we look for a nice quiet room to recover for a few hours.

Must See HDTV (January 28th - February 3rd)

There's a football game this week, in case you hadn't heard -- but that's not all. Netflix is debuting the series that it claims will change internet TV, and there's also a few other new options to keep an eye out for. Look below for the highlights this week, followed after the break by our weekly listing of what to look out for in TV, Blu-ray and videogames.

The Americans
Add another basic cable series to your watchlist this week, as FX debuts The Americans. Based in 1981, it focuses on a family of Soviet spies living in the US during the Cold War. The show already has a two year commitment to air in the UK, so it's unlikely to face a quick hook -- feel free to settle in.
(FX, January 30th, 10PM)

Super Bowl XLVII
It's the Super Bowl. All other Sunday night programing has been pushed aside, so you'll either be huddled around the flatscreen watching 49ers/Ravens or... we're not sure what.
(CBS, February 3rd, 6:30PM)

House of Cards
Netflix's next venture into the world of original programming begins Friday morning, when it will make the entire first season of its series House of Cards available for streaming. Starring Kevin Spacey, it has all the trademarks of a well produced cable series, it's just not on cable -- it's on the internet.

Djokovic wins third successive Australian Open

MELBOURNE (Reuters) - Novak Djokovic became the first man to win three successive Australian Open titles in the professional era when he beat third seed Andy Murray 6-7 7-6 6-3 6-2 in a battle of attrition on Sunday.

The Serb, who has now won four of his six grand slam titles in Melbourne, managed to win the important points as the Briton suffered from blisters on his right foot and problems at the top of his left hamstring.

Both players produced superb service games throughout the match with Djokovic the first to achieve a break in the eighth game of the third set, propelling him to the brink of the title after the pair had shared tiebreaks in the first two sets.

Djokovic then capitalized on a flagging Murray, who had battled to a five-set win over Roger Federer on Friday, breaking early in the fourth set and then holding on to clinch the Norman Brookes Challenge Cup for the fourth time.

"What a joy. It's an incredible feeling to win this trophy again," Djokovic said. "This is definitely my favorite grand slam. I love this tournament. I love this court.

"I have to congratulate Andy and thank him.

"We have played so many great matches in the last two years. Bad luck for tonight but I wish you best of luck for the season."

Djokovic was not the only man chasing a record.

U.S. Open champion Murray, who beat Djokovic in the New York final in September, was also hoping to become the first Briton to win the title since Fred Perry in 1934 and the first man to win his second grand slam immediately after winning his first.

Djokovic had the first opportunity to take an advantage when he held four break points in the sixth game, but Murray fought them all off and leveled at 3-3 with a kicking ace down the center line.

The world number one held another break point in the eighth game, but Murray again saved and forced a tiebreak, which he sealed 7-2 after he had jumped out to a 4-0 lead and never looked like giving it up.

MEDICAL TIMEOUT

Murray's first serve, which had caused him problems in the first set, was much better in the second and the Scot reduced the number of unforced errors though neither man looked likely to lose their serve.

The top seeded Djokovic seized the advantage in the tiebreak when Murray double faulted after he had been forced to stop his serve as a feather from birds in the roof fluttered down on court.

That point gave the Serb a 3-2 lead, which he capitalized on to win 7-3 when Murray hit a backhand into the net.

The Briton then took a medical timeout before the third set began to have sticking plaster and strapping tape applied to blisters around the big toe on his right foot and the momentum shifted to the Serbian world number one.

Djokovic, however, waited until the time was right to pounce on Murray's weakness, which he did in the eighth game when he claimed the first break of the match after almost three hours of play to take a 5-3 lead.

The Serb then blasted through his service game to love to take the third set in a relatively lightning 41 minutes after the first two sets had taken 68 and 65 minutes respectively.

Murray's foot continued to give him trouble in the fourth set as he was unable to stop abruptly, change direction, or push off properly to generate power.

Djokovic broke in the third game and sensing the finishing line was in sight, achieved a double break in the fifth and sealed the win when a Murray backhand return thudded into the net.

"I'd like to thank Novak," Murray said.

"His record here is incredible. There are very few people who have managed to do what he has done here.

"He's an amazing champion, so well done to him."

Fast food linked to higher asthma and allergy risk

New study links fast-food consumption to a greater risk for developing asthma, eczema and allergies.

Tue, Jan 15 2013 at 8:56 AM

Teens and kids who eat a lot of fast food may be at greater risk for developing asthma, eczema?and allergies, according to a new study published in the British Medical Journal's respiratory magazine,?Thorax.

?

For the study, researchers from?the University of Auckland in New Zealand and the University of Nottingham in the United Kingdom looked at surveys from more than 500,000 kids in 51 countries to determine how diet affected their allergy-related risks. They found that?eating fast food three times a week may lead to asthma, eczema?and itchy, watery eyes in children. ?

?

Researchers surveyed kids and their parents to determine whether or not they experienced symptoms of allergies, asthma and eczema. Participants also shared what types of foods they consumed each week. In the study, children in their early teens who ate fast food three or more times each week had a 39 percent greater risk of severe asthma. For 6- and 7-year-olds, there was a 27 percent increased risk. Overall, kids who ate fast food three or more times a week had about a 30 percent increased risk of severe allergies. The results were consistent across all age groups regardless of gender or socioeconomic status. ?

?

Interestingly, kids who ate fruit were able to cut their risk of developing these conditions. Researchers found that kids who ate three or more portions of fruit each week reduced their risk of severe asthma, eczema and allergies by between 11 and 14 percent.

Afghan orphans hope music to win 'American hearts'

In a country where the arts and music suffered heavily under the Taliban, young musicians ? including dozens of girls ? are representing the potential in Afghanistan's future.

By Thanh Truong, Correspondent, NBC News

KABUL, Afghanistan - From the cold basement of an orphanage in Kabul, the beat of a bass drum bounces through the halls.

Hitting the high hat and cymbals was Laila, a 13-year old orphan and the only known female drummer in Afghanistan.?

"I like playing the drums and there are no other girls in Afghanistan playing the drums,? Laila said with a big smile. ?I'm the only girl and I want to become well known as an Afghan girl playing drums.?

For now, she plays in a basement, but soon it'll be D.C.'s Kennedy Center and New York's Carnegie Hall.?

Laila and 10 other girls from her orphanage will be joining ensembles from the Afghan National Institute of Music as they make their U.S. debut.?

For many of the performers, it will be their first time out of the country and their first time in America.?

"I hear it is very clean and has big buildings and you have such freedom there,? 10-year old Sapna said. "I forget the name of the president of America, but I have heard of him."

Sapna plays the piano and likes the "fast songs" that allow her to move her little fingers quickly over the keys.?

As the security in Afghanistan crumbles, 'Nightly' returns to an orphanage that Brian Williams first visited in 2009 to find girls with big dreams who are focused on getting into college.

Music is part of the curriculum at this orphanage run by Andeisha Farid, the executive director of the Afghan Child Education and Caring Organization.?

'Hope for a better future'
In a country where female freedoms are few, Farid said these young girls represent the potential in Afghanistan's future.

"Afghan women, they suffer so badly. They even struggle for their very basic human rights,? Farid said. ?We hope for a better future for Afghanistan. If we can properly invest in these children, a long-term investment, they realize that there is hope in Afghanistan.?

The sheer fact that dozens of girls are practicing and learning music is a sign of progress in a country where only an estimated 15 percent of women can even read and write, never mind read music or play an instrument.

The arts and music suffered heavily under the Taliban, and not just for women.?

Oct. 30: Brian swaps eyewear with one of the girls at the Kabul orphanage.

Since 2001 a small group of Afghans have worked to bring music back to the country. Ahmad Sarmast, who holds a doctorate in music, spearheaded the movement and the effort culminated in the 2010 establishment of the Afghan National Institute of Music.?

Musicians and their mentors from the ANIM will embark on a two-week tour of the U.S. starting February 2. They'll be playing a combination of classical and Afghan pieces.

Music has given these children an opportunity that so few have in Afghanistan and they are eager to share what they've learned.

"People can understand each other's hearts through music. American people can understand Afghan hearts and Afghans can understand American hearts. It's universal," said Sapna.

Yet, hurdles remain.?

Oct. 30 2009: Andeisha Farid is making a difference in a dangerous place, providing a safe haven in Afghanistan. NBC's Brian Williams reports.

Twelve-year-old Fareshta said pressure from her home village prevented her from playing the trumpet.

NBC first met Fareshta when Brian Williams visited her orphanage.

Fareshta said people in her village threatened to make her family outcasts if she kept on attending music school.?

She now only plays when she is in the orphanage. And, while the other girls prepare for their performances in the U.S., she won't be going.?

"I want to go music school and play more music," Fareshta said.

She shrugged when asked if it all seemed unfair. After all, so much that has and is happening in Afghanistan seems unfair.

But after listening to a girl like Laila practicing on the drums, it is easy to understand that the music these young people create is a message of hope in a country awash with disappointments.?

Bruised Republicans vow to give party's image a makeover

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina (Reuters) - Bruised and divided by November's election losses, Republican leaders emerged from a series of self-analysis and strategy sessions this week with the outlines of a game plan to reverse voting trends that favor Democrats.

After a frank assessment of the party's shortcomings, state and national officials at the Republican National Committee's winter meetings vowed, above all, to improve the image of a party that they acknowledge is seen as unwelcoming - or even hostile - to single women and the nation's growing minority population.

"You are going to see a very aggressive effort by this party to put on a different face," said Sally Bradshaw, a Florida political strategist and one of five party leaders on a panel that will study how Republicans can refurbish their image.

There were closed-door strategy sessions on using technology to counter Democrats' sophisticated methods of identifying potential supporters and getting them to vote.

Republican leaders also examined how to improve communications with grass-roots activists who are the backbone of national and local campaigns, and on how to cast the party's conservative message in more appealing ways.

But the underlying message in the meetings was the challenge that Republicans face in broadening the appeal of a divided party with lingering image problems and declining support among single women, Hispanics and blacks.

Those voting groups helped to carry Democratic President Barack Obama to victory over Republican Mitt Romney in the November elections. Republicans also lost seats in both chambers of Congress, where Democrats control the Senate and Republicans lead the House.

Romney carried most of the white vote, which makes up about 72 percent of the U.S. electorate. But he was blown out by Obama in the scramble for minority and single-women voters in particular.

The election followed a bitter campaign that was marked by sometimes incendiary rhetoric from Republican candidates that turned off many voters, especially women and minorities.

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney's secretly recorded comment about the "47 percent" of voters who were government-dependent and would not back him, along with insensitive comments about rape by two Republicans running for the Senate, helped to foster the notion that the party was an out-of-touch bastion of older white males.

There also were comments by various Republican candidates - including Romney - that were viewed as particularly hard-line against illegal immigrants. Those remarks hurt Republicans among many Hispanic voters.

In Charlotte, Republican leaders said they recognize that they have some rebuilding to do.

"It's not a particularly complicated formula: We got beat, so we have to change what we're doing," said Bradshaw, a close ally of former Florida governor Jeb Bush. "You can't do the same thing over and over again and expect to be successful the next go-around."

'ANGER AS A HABIT'

For Republicans, the challenge will be significant.

Polls continue to indicate that the nation's fast-growing minority communities favor Democrats over Republicans - and that nearly half of Americans have a negative view of the Republican Party.

For some Republicans, the formula to success among minorities boils down to a few principles: give the party a friendlier face, emphasize the virtue of conservative values, and have a platform on immigration that is seen as welcoming, not overly harsh.

Former House speaker Newt Gingrich, who led a strategy session called "Messaging Matters," said the party could learn from what he called former president Ronald Reagan's happy and optimistic outlook.

"We value anger as a habit," Gingrich said of Republicans, adding such a tone has hurt the party in its policy and political struggles with the popular Obama.

"We will win that argument better if we're in the Reagan tradition of happy warriors than if we are in the tradition of some of our candidates, who have been at best dour," he told reporters.

State officials from across the nation said the party should not abandon its conservative proposals for reduced government spending and stronger economic growth, but needed to articulate them better.

"We have to look at everything, from the way we deliver the message to the way candidates are trained," said Roger Villere, Louisiana state chairman.

REASONS FOR OPTIMISM

But some policy adjustments could be required, including support for new immigration measures to appeal to Hispanics.

Republican Senator Marco Rubio of Florida is preparing an immigration plan in Congress, and Jeb Bush argued in a Wall Street Journal column on Friday for a broad approach that would help give illegal immigrants a path to U.S. citizenship.

That proposal will be opposed by some of the party's conservative and Tea Party factions, which have been successful in challenging establishment Republicans in primaries only to see their more ideological candidates lose to Democrats in the general election.

But Republicans said there were still reasons for long-term optimism. Politics is cyclical, and Democrats have faced their own dark days after disappointing election losses in 1988 and 2004.

The party also still has a healthy outlook in many states, where there are 30 Republican governors. And there is a crop of young Republican lawmakers rising out of the statehouses - some with an eye on running for Congress as soon as 2014, or president as soon as 2016.

One of the Republican governors seen as a potential candidate for the White House, Bobby Jindal of Louisiana, gave the meeting's keynote address on Thursday night and offered a blistering critique of the party. He said it was too focused on Washington-based budget battles and too insular to reach out to new constituents.

Jindal offered a list of political changes that he said Republicans should make before the next election, including suggestions such as, "Stop looking backward," and, "Compete for every single vote."

"The time for gnashing our teeth is over. Now we have some work to do," said Will Deschamps, state chairman in Montana. "We need a message that lets people know we care about them. We need to convince people that we are the party that can improve their way of life."

Residential Real Estate Market: Sales Decrease and Prices ...

According to the real estate brokers? Centris? provincial database, there were 2,632 residential transactions in the Montr?al Census Metropolitan Area (CMA) in November 2012, a 19 per cent decrease compared to November 2011, said the Greater Montr?al Real Estate Board (GMREB). However, the median price for all three property categories increased over the same period.

All property categories registered a decrease in sales in November 2012 compared to November 2011. Sales of single-family homes fell by 18 per cent, while condominium and plex sales both decreased by 20 per cent.

?The decrease in single-family home sales affected all price ranges,? said Diane M?nard, Vice-President of the GMREB Board of Directors. ?The decrease in condominium sales was most evident in the $100,000 to $200,000 price range, while sales actually increased for condominiums priced at $500,000 or more,? she added.

The decrease in residential sales in November 2012 extended to all of the Montr?al CMA?s main areas. Compared to November 2011, sales fell by 15 per cent in Laval, by 17 per cent in Montr?al and on the North Shore, by 25 per cent on the South Shore, and by 29 per cent in Vaudreuil-Soulanges.

In terms of prices, the median price of single-family homes increased by 3 per cent in the Montr?al CMA in November 2012, reaching $277,000. The South Shore ($265,000) stood out with a 5 per cent increase in the median price of single-family homes, followed by the Island of Montr?al ($383,000), Vaudreuil-Soulanges ($265,000) and the North Shore ($233,000), which all registered an increase of 1 per cent. Finally, Laval ($282,550) posted a 1 per cent decrease in the median price of single-family homes.

As at November 30, 2012, the number of active listings on the real estate brokers? provincial database increased by 10 per cent in comparison with the same date last year.

?The increase in active listings was more pronounced for condominiums,? said Paul Cardinal, Market Analysis Manager at the Qu?bec Federation of Real Estate Boards. ?In the past year, the number of condominiums for sale was up 23 per cent, while single-family homes and plexes registered respective increases of 2 and 6 per cent. Market conditions were therefore more relaxed for condominium buyers,? he added.

Obama: Privilege to use King's Bible in inaugural

President Barack Obama says it was a privilege to take the oath of office using a Bible that had been owned by the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.

Obama paused by a statue of King in the Capitol Rotunda after a luncheon hosted by members of Congress. He was accompanied by his wife, Michelle, and Vice President Joe Biden and his wife, Jill.

"You know this is the first time I have seen this," he said.

The King bust ? a bronze sculpture 36 inches high on a 66-inch high Belgian black marble base ? has been in the Capitol Rotunda since 1986, according to the Architect of the Capitol.

King's Bible was one of two Obama used for the ceremonial inauguration.

"I had the great privilege that the Bible we used was his Bible and they asked for it to be inscribed," Obama said. The other Bible belonged to President Abraham Lincoln.

Monday was the federal celebration of King's birthday.

Land price increases across Karnataka

Land rates in KarnatakaOver the past seven years, the land and real estate prices have increased in tier II cities across Karnataka.?The secondary cities across Karnataka where the real estate developers and buyers are showing interest are Mysore, Mangalore, Hubli-Dharwad, Belgaum, Gulbarga, Shimoga and Davanagere.

Over the past three years the real estate prices in Mysore, Mangalore, Hubli-Dharwad, Belgaum and Gulbarga have gone up, according to the records available in the Department of Stamps and Registration in Bangalore. Bangalore city. People are now rushing for open spaces on the outskirts where the property rates are still affordable.

According to realtors, in tier II cities, a 2 BHK apartment of 1,000 sq ft is not available for anything less than Rs 30 lakh and on the outskirts the same apartment is available for Rs 25 lakh. The rental value have also become costlier by 8-9 times compared to what they were six to seven years ago.

These cities with a population of nearly 10 lakh, have shown an increase despite slow growth in the real estate business. A realtor said that the real estate business is on the upswing and they are expecting things to get better in the coming years.

A senior officer at the Stamps and Registration Department, said that the land prices rise in secondary cities due to the availability of facilities like educational institutions, hospitals, entertainment centres and shopping malls. The state government is also planning to take care of the infrastructural facilities particularly roads and sanitation.

Chuck Schumer Promises Democrats Will Pass a Budget This Year

Sen. Chuck Schumer promised the Senate would pass a budget that includes tax reforms this year on NBC's?Meet the Press. "First, it?s not true that we haven?t had budget control in effect the last several years. The budget control act of 2011 put in rigid spending cuts," Schumer said, defending their track record.. (Republicans like to claim Democrats haven't passed a budget in years.) "We're going to do a budget this year, and it's going to have revenues in it," Schumer promised. "And our Republican colleagues better get used to that fact." Schumer said he's spoken with the top Senate Democratic leaders, and he's promising their budget will take on?sequestration and tax reform. "It?s going to be a great opportunity for us because in our budget that we will pass, we will have tax reform? It?s going to include revenues," Schumer said.

White House senior adviser David Plouffe gave a preview of the President's Inaugural address during his appearances on the Sunday shows. On Fox News Sunday, Plouffe said Obama's speech will stress the need for "common ground" with Republicans. "I do think he?s going to talk about how our founding values and vision can still provide us with a guiding pathway in a changing world," Plouffe said. "He?s going to talk about how our political system doesn?t require us to talk about all of our differences and political disputes, but it does require us to seek common ground when it can and should exist. He?s going to make that point very strongly." He did also say Republicans were to blame for Congress' lack of progress. ?"The barrier to progress here is not the president. We need to see more Republicans in Congress willing to compromise, even on revenues," Plouffe said.?

On CNN's State of the Union, Plouffe said the Inaugural address will be "hopeful," and it will lay out a clear image of his second term. "What he is going to do, I think, is remind the country that our founding principles and values can guide us in a modern, changing world," Plouffe said. But Plouffe, who is leaving the White House shortly, explained the administration sees a much easier path to completion for immigration reform than gun control. "I think there is a huge consensus [on immigration], business community, Republicans around the country, the faith community, so obviously the legislative process those work its way through," Plouffe said. "But this is the moment. The stars seem to be aligned to finally get comprehensive immigration reform. So we would expect that." The outlook on guns: not so sunny. "I think on gun safety we have a very good opportunity," he said, but "it is going to be a hard battle." Plouffe said the?administration?is "confident and that's one reason we want to stay in communication with the American people because I think they're going to demand action here."

Missouri Sen. Roy Blunt had some advice during Fox News Sunday for President Obama on the first day of his second term: be realistic. Blunt wants the President to "legislate realistically" during his second term. "He doesn?t seem to have a specific agenda. He speaks in general terms. He likes the executive order approach a lot more than the legislative approach," Blunt said. "You?ve got to legislate, and you?ve got to legislate realistically. You don?t control the entire congress. It takes three entities to get a bill passed into law and you?ve got to come up with something that can pass a democratic senate, a republican house, and the white house can at the end of the day be for," he said. Are you listening, Mr. President?

Sen. John Barrasso told CNN's State of the Union host Candy Crowley he doesn't expect the more comprehensive gun rights proposals will pass. "I don't think it will," Barrasso said. He apparently didn't get the memo that the debt ceiling fight's been delayed for three months, because he argued that the economy is more important than gun rights. "The major issues that face American families, which are jobs and the economy and the debt and spending," he said. "That's where people are focused. That's the big anxiety in this country." Barrasso thinks passing gun control laws will likely negatively effect Democrats in the long run. "He has six Democrats up for election in two years in states where the president received fewer than 42 percent of the votes. And he doesn't want his Democrats to have to choose between their own constituents and the president's positions," Barrasso said. He also accused the President of not addressing mental health. "As a doctor,?can tell you the president essentially ignored the issues of mental health and violence in society in the media and video games, and he has focused so much on what may be happening at gun shows or gun shelves and gun stores that I think he is failing to try to find a solution to the problem of the tragedy of Newtown."

Sen. Ted Cruz refused to tell NBC's Meet the Press host David Gregory whether or not he thinks the NRA's latest ad that featured the President's daughters "crossed a line." Cruz would tell him he thinks the President is using Newtown to push a liberal agenda, though. "There is a fundamental point of hypocrisy when it comes to gun control," Cruz said. "Many of the proponents of gun control are very wealthy," Cruz explained. "They live communities where they can outsource police protection... If you are talking to a single woman living in Anacostia, who has the misfortune of living next to a crack house, to tell her she doesn?t have a constitutional right to keep and bear arms, I think is fundamentally wrong." When pressed, Cruz again turned his scorn towards the President. "What I don?t think is constructive is what the president is doing right now," Cruz said. "Within minutes of that horrible tragedy in Newtown, the president began trying to exploit that tragedy, to push a gun control agenda that is designed to appeal to partisans." Cruz sees the Presdient as an opportunist more than anything. "This isn?t designed to solve violent crime," Cruz?said. "This is designed to assuage liberal partisans."

Presidential?adviser David Axelrod spoke in much broader terms than usual about Obama's plans for his second term on Meet the Press. "There?s a larger priority... which is how do you create an economy ? rebuild an economy in which the American dream, the American compact is fresh," Axelrod said. "That?s not just dealing with the fiscal crisis; it?s about education; it?s about research and development; it?s about controlling our energy future. All of these are part of the equation, and we can?t just do one piece of it." Axelrod stressed not letting the ever-changing fiscal deadline disasters get in the way of working on more substantial planning. "We can?t let that piece become a smoke screen for not acting on the others," he said.

Twitter Is Having Connectivity Issues Again, But Why?

3508089511_bce1ac518e_zWith a lot of people in the United States off for the national holiday, Twitter appears to be buckling under the pressure. Right now, the service is experiencing issues, including the inability to connect to any of its official apps. As is usually the case, the problems are intermittent and don’t affect all users. Sadly, when the service goes down like this, there isn’t an explanation like there used to be. Remember the fail whale? We haven’t seen that guy in quite some time. Now when the site is down, we end up getting a white screen in our browsers. The company added this message to its status site: Some users may be experiencing issues accessing Twitter. Our engineers are currently working to resolve the issue. Currently, the site is up and down, and you also get error messages when clicking a tweet button on a website: This is the second “site issue” that Twitter has had in the past four days, and the company doesn’t go into any detail on what the problem was or is. As a communication platform, it’s key for Twitter to be up as much as possible. While it’s understandable that every service has downtime issues, it seems to be a dirty little issue that has followed Twitter since it launched in 2006. Why can’t the service stay up and what are the problems that they’re experiencing? These are questions that are hard to answer, even when we ask. What I do know is that when a site goes down and there is little or no communication to its users about it, hours are spent asking one another “Is Twitter down or is it just me?” In a word, it’s annoying for everyone involved. Complex issues face every company at this type of scale, including Facebook and Google. The issue with Twitter is that it’s the leader in real-time communication, therefore its users experience all of these problems in real-time as well. This is similar to something happening with AT&T and you not being able to fire off a text message and not knowing why. While Twitter is free, it does have an obligation to communicate with its users, since its intent is to be the “pulse of the planet.” It’s kind of hard to be that when you tend to flatline at random moments. If we’re supposed to trust Twitter when we’re trying to

Obama to be sworn in for 2nd term at White House

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Formally embarking on his second term, President Barack Obama was set to take the oath of office Sunday surrounded by family in an intimate inauguration at the White House, 24 hours before re-enacting the ceremony in front of hundreds of thousands outside the Capitol.

The subdued swearing-in at the White House Blue Room is a function of the calendar and the Constitution, which says presidents automatically begin their new terms at noon on Jan. 20. Because that date fell this year on a Sunday, a day on which inauguration ceremonies historically are not held, organizers scheduled a second, public swearing-in for Monday.

A crowd of up to 800,000 people is expected to gather on the National Mall to witness that event, which will take place on the Capitol's red, white and blue bunting-draped west front. Chief Justice John Roberts, who famously flubbed the oath of office that Obama took in 2009, was on tap to swear the president in both days.

Vice President Joe Biden was to be sworn in earlier Sunday at the Naval Observatory, his official residence. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor, who was appointed by Obama during his first term, was to administer the oath of office.

Before the ceremony, Biden was celebrating an early morning Mass with friends and family. About 120 people were expected to be on hand to watch him place his hand on a Bible his family has used since 1893 as he takes the oath.

Biden was then to join Obama at Arlington National Cemetery for a wreath-laying ceremony.

Once the celebrations are over, Obama will plunge into a second-term agenda still dominated by the economy, which slowly churned out of recession during his first four years in office. The president will try to cement his legacy with sweeping domestic changes, pledging to achieve both an immigration overhaul and stricter gun laws despite opposition from a divided Congress.

But for one weekend at least, Washington was putting politics aside. Obama called the nation's inaugural traditions "a symbol of how our democracy works and how we peacefully transfer power."

"But it should also be an affirmation that we're all in this together," he said Saturday as he opened a weekend of activities at a Washington elementary school.

Only a small group of family members was expected to attend Obama's Sunday swearing-in, including first lady Michelle Obama and daughters Malia and Sasha. A few reporters were to witness the event.

Roberts was to administer the oath shortly before noon in the Blue Room, an oval space with majestic views of the South Lawn and the Washington Monument.

Named for the color of the drapes, upholstery and carpet, the Blue Room is not typically used for ceremonies. It primarily has been a reception room as well as the site of the only presidential wedding held in the White House, when President Grover Cleveland married Frances Folsum in 1886.

Later Sunday, Obama and Biden were to speak at a reception attended by supporters.

The president planned to save his most expansive remarks for Monday, when he delivers his second inaugural address to the crowd on the Mall and millions more watching across the country and the world. Obama started working on the speech in early December and was still tinkering with it into the weekend, aides said.

The president's address will set the stage for the policy objectives he seeks to achieve in his second term, including speeding up the economic recovery, passing comprehensive immigration and gun control measures and ending the war in Afghanistan. However, aides said Obama would save the specifics of those agenda items for his Feb. 12 State of the Union address.

The president launched a weekend of inaugural activities Saturday by heading up a National Day of Service. Along with his family, Obama helped hundreds of volunteers spruce up a Washington area elementary school.

Obama put on rubber gloves, picked up a paint brush and helped volunteers stain a bookshelf.

Obama added the service event to the inaugural schedule in 2009 and is hoping it becomes a tradition followed for future presidents.

Mrs. Obama, speaking to volunteers Sunday, espoused the importance of giving back in the midst of the weekend of pomp, circumstance and celebration.

"The reason why we're here, why we're standing here, why we're able to celebrate this weekend is because a lot of people worked hard and supported us, and we've got a job to do and this is a symbol of the kind of work that we need to be doing the next four years," Michelle Obama said at Burrville Elementary.

REVIEW ? Box Full Of Kisses Gift Box : Mom Knows It All. ? PR ...

Valentine?s Day is approaching. If you?re still looking for the right gift, Box Full Of Kisses might be just what you?re looking for!

Box Full Of Kisses For Her

ABOUT BOX FULL OF KISSES

Whether naughty or nice, celebrating an anniversary, Valentine?s Day?or just because?Box Full of Kisses expresses everything you couldn?t find the words to say. The answer to a gift-giving dilemma, it is also a foolproof present packaged precisely as needed.

The Box for Her and the Box for Him both include five products?each touching upon the five senses. Engage the sense of smell with Eau du parfum and cologne. Titillate your touch with body lotion (in the box for her only) and the Book Full of Kisses, which defines and illustrates thirty-six sensual smooches. Taste the spark between you with a Mouthful of Kisses breath mints (in the box for him only). Listen to your partner?s rapid heartbeat as you play the Kissing Game (deck of cards included) and see how many kisses the Kissing Card Coupons can get you. The MSRP of each box is $36.

MY THOUGHTS

I received a Box Full of Kisses for Her for review. I first noticed the packaging: a sturdy, cute little red box that could most definitely be reused for jewelry, important notes, pens and pencils, etc. I love things that can be re-purposed, so this was a definitely plus.

I?ll admit I had to read a little bit into this to understand exactly what it was for. I wasn?t sure at first if it was supposed to be some type of sensual game or simply a cute gift box of random items for Valentine?s Day or an anniversary. I?ve decided that it?s a good mix of the two. The Book Full of Kisses is a cute insight into several of the most popular kisses and what makes them popular. Though most will have probably done, or at least heard of, them all, it was still a cute read. The kissing coupons are 12 cards that each entitle the cardholder to one kiss of her choice (due immediately, of course!) ? a unique and playful way to let your other half know you?d like a smooch. The kissing game is a simple matching game in which the winner gets the kiss of his or her choice. The fragrance of the lotion and perfume leave me feeling torn about whether I like them or not: at first they smell both playful and sensual, but soon are overpowering. After one spritz of the perfume, the smell lingered in my nose for hours. I can definitely say that a small amount of each goes a long way! My only complaint about the overall Box Full of Kisses for Her is that the retail value seems a bit high in relation to the quality of some of the products. The box itself, cards, and book are pretty durable and well-made, but I was less than impressed with the stickers on the perfume and lotion: they look like something I could?ve printed from my home computer and stuck on as labels and both are peeling off on the corners. For $36, I?d be a bit happier with packaging that at least looked a bit more high-quality.

Overall, this is a cute idea for Valentine?s Day, an anniversary, or better yet, a ?just because? gift. Box Full of Kisses is definitely a unique gift and a refreshing change from the usual card, flowers, and candy on Valentine?s Day. When you don?t feel like just asking for a kiss, let the Box Full of Kisses do it for you for some added playfulness.

Latest inaugural forecast: Bit warmer than in 2009

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Consider it the first fact check of a Barack Obama campaign pledge for his second term: Will he, or Mother Nature, deliver on promised warmer Inauguration Day weather?

It's shaping up as a close call.

In September, while campaigning in Colorado, Obama was talking to a potential voter who mentioned he had been one of the hundreds of thousands of people outdoors at Obama's bone-chilling first inaugural in 2009, when the noontime temperature was 28 degrees. Obama promised: "This one is going to be warmer."

Scientifically, the president doesn't have control of day-to-day weather. While his policies can lessen or worsen future projected global warming on a large scale, they cannot do anything about Washington's daily temperature on Jan. 21.

Still, it's a promise that for a long time looked close to a sure thing. The history of local weather was on Obama's side.

On average, the normal high is 43 degrees and the normal low is 28, but that's just around dawn. There have been 19 traditional January inaugurations and only two were colder. Ronald Reagan's second in 1985 was a frigid 7 with subzero wind chills and John F. Kennedy's in 1961 was a snow-covered 22. Jimmy Carter's 1977 inauguration also was 28.

Then there was the general warming trend Washington had been stuck in. The last time the nation's capital stayed below freezing all day was Jan. 22, 2011. The city has gone a record 700-plus days since it had 2 inches or more of snow.

An Arctic cold front looks to be racing toward the mid-Atlantic, so it will be cooler than normal on Monday, but probably not cooler than 2009, said Nikole Listemaa, a senior forecaster at the National Weather Service office in Sterling, Va., that oversees forecasts for the capital area.

Look for highs around 40 degrees with noon temperatures in the mid- to upper 30s, Listemaa said Saturday. That would keep Obama's pledge.

There's also a 30 percent chance of light snow showers for Monday. But the Arctic cold front won't arrive until Monday night into Tuesday, Listemaa added.

Extreme cold on Inauguration Day, folklore says, can be a killer.

In 1841, newly elected president William Henry Harrison stood outside without a coat or hat as he spoke for an hour and 40 minutes. He caught a cold that day and it became pneumonia and he died one month after being sworn in.

Twelve years later, outgoing first lady Abigail Fillmore got sick from sitting outside on a cold wet platform as Franklin Pierce was inaugurated and she died of pneumonia at the end of the month. Doctors now know that pneumonia is caused by germs, but prolonged exposure to extreme cold weather may hurt the airways and make someone more susceptible to getting sick.

There's one thing Washington's history shows. Bad weather generally creates bad traffic jams.

Kennedy found that out in his 1961 inauguration when 8 inches of snow fell overnight and crippled the city for what at that time was Washington's worst traffic jam. Thousands of cars were abandoned in the snow.

Get a head start on your Roth IRA in 2013

Roth IRA head start 2013Good News! The IRS raised the contribution limit for both the 401(k) plan and IRA by $500 this year. They also raised the income limit for the IRA so if you?re borderline, you should check with the IRS if you can contribute more this year. This increased limit is great because we can save more for retirement and I?m sure many of us made a New Year?s resolution to save more in 2013.

    Roth IRA

The Roth IRA is a particularly good saving vehicle for workers who are already participating in their company?s 401(k) plan. For 2013, workers can contribute $5,500 to their Roth IRA. The great thing about the Roth IRA is once you satisfy the requirement, then you won?t have to pay any tax in that account. You can also withdraw your contribution without penalty at any time in case you need some money. The Roth IRA will give you more options to deal with taxation when it?s time to withdraw in retirement. Most of us have some retirement saving in a pre tax account like the 401(k) plan. When you withdraw the fund from the 401(k) plan in retirement, you will have to pay the regular income tax rate. If you have some saving in the Roth IRA, then you can minimize tax by mixing the withdrawal and avoiding the higher tax brackets.

    Where to get $5,500?

There are a few ways to contribute to the Roth IRA. One is to contribute every month from your savings account. This is good because you can take advantage of dollar cost averaging and invest throughout the year. On the other hand, I like to contribute in one shot at the beginning of the year. Like most investors, I sold some investment near the end of 2012 so I can offset some gains. Instead of reinvesting everything, I set $5,500 aside for the Roth IRA. Now that it?s 2013, I can just transfer that $5,500 into my Roth IRA and wait for a buying opportunity. It may sound like I?m playing a shell game by just moving money around, but why pay tax when you don?t have to?

    Investing early can be beneficial

A Vanguard study has shown that investing in a lump sum early on is better than dollar cost averaging. Historically the stock market rises so over the long run so the lump sum has more time to take advantage of the market gain. This is one reason to set aside $5,500 and plow it into the Roth IRA early every year. How about you? Did you make a New Year?s resolution to save more for retirement? If you did, why not go ahead and finish off the Roth IRA early? Getting one item out of the way will make financial planning a little bit easier the rest of the year.

    *Assumptions

    1. I?m assuming an investor will have earned income in 2013 so they can contribute to the Roth IRA.
    2. If you are near the income limit line, you probably should wait until the end of the year before contributing so it will be simpler.
    3. As Steve pointed out ? watch out for the wash sale rule. Don?t sell an investment at a loss in your taxable account and purchase the same investment in an IRA within 30 days. You can?t take the tax deduction if you do this.

Dr. Annie Kagan is a former New York City based chiropractor and singer/songwriter. In 1996 she left her hectic city life, and moved to a small house by the bay. While trying to figure out what to do with the next chapter of her life, her brother Billy died unexpectedly and began speaking to her about the afterlife. This profound experience took her on a journey that changed the way she thought about life, death, and the universe and resulted in her debut book ?The Afterlife of Billy Fingers: How My Bad Boy Brother Proved to Me There?s Life after Death,? being released by Hampton Roads in March 2013. Canada?s Handyman Challenge: Season 2 Sneak Peek

    CanadasHandymanChallengeSeason2HostJudges

A new season of Canada?s Handyman Challenge is upon us, premiering a week from today on Tuesday, January 22nd at 10pm ET|PT. What?s new this season? To start, not only is the winner going to be crowned Canada?s Best Handyman, but there?s also an outstanding prize of $25,000 at stake! Returning to the judges panel this year are HGTV?s Scott McGillivray and Bryan Baeumler, but new to the group is the deck man himself, Paul Lafrance. Plus the hilarious Jenn Robertson has teamed up with the gang as the new host of the show.

    ?

I had the exciting experience to meet the host and judges on location for their promo shoot. I found out what we can look forward to from the auditions this year, what it was like to be a judge, what they?re looking for in a winner, and more!? They were hilarious to interview, so fun to be around, definitely an example of the comedic dynamic we can expect to see as they share the screen together in Season 2 of CHC.

Watch these five video extras below, plus check back the CHC showsite this coming Monday as we release three more.

Easily Track the Rental Market with Zephyr Realtor-Developed Web ...

San Francisco, CA ? January 17, 2012 ? (RealEstateRama) ? Last year, Oliver Burgelman, long-time agent at Zephyr Real Estate, created www.pricesquares.com, a new web tool to demonstrate how the real estate market trends in San Francisco. That tool has now been augmented to include the rental market. This new feature shows how rental costs differ from neighborhood to neighborhood and offers an easy way to find rentals in San Francisco.

Price Squares, an invaluable method for following real estate pricing, availability and sales, is now equally useful for rental properties. The site?s map can be explored and customized by neighborhood and further customized within that neighborhood to a ?price square? as small as one block. By signing up for the free membership, users will be notified of new listings, changes in existing listings and any other pertinent information. Membership is not required to navigate the site, but is necessary to receive updates.

Burgelman has devised a system where the information is easily available without using various sites, which may or may not always utilize the most current data available. The website is streamlined and intuitive, making it a very effective means of gathering useful data. Price Squares is designed to assist users in making informed decisions about properties, both for rent and for sale in the San Francisco market place. The website has a new, user-friendly interface as well as an appealing design with maps scaled dynamically to fit browser windows. Price Squares is easy-to-navigate with a variety of helpful information and tips as well as convenient instructions for maximizing its usefulness.

Originally developed for his personal use and that of his clients, the value of Burgelman?s website has received praise and recognition, creating quite a stir in the blogosphere including noteworthy mentions on Curbed SF and The Front Steps. ?My best clients are my most informed clients, so I wanted to create a site where clients could crunch the numbers,? commented Burgelman. ?That it has become a tool many people find helpful has been a delightful bonus.?

Burgelman, who partners with Mike Ackerman at Zephyr Real Estate, is one of the company?s Top Producers and is an e-PRO Internet Professional. He is a member in good standing of the San Francisco, California and National Associations of REALTORS? and is fluent in English, Dutch and French.
