Vegan Acorn Squash Stuffed with Creamy Brown Rice and Greens ...

Yield: 4 servings

[Sorry, this post published before I was ready--not sure what key I inadvertently hit--so stay-tuned for a photograph!]

Note: though filling acorn squash with this casserole makes for a beautiful presentation and a fun dining experience, the casserole is plenty tasty enought to simply serve in a gratin?dish or bowl.????

I seem to be on a roll with humble beginnings lately.? This tasty and comforting dish?simple but pretty enough for company?was inspired by acorn squash that I had cooked a few days ago, but never eaten.? I had been planning to stuff them, but couldn?t decide with what.? But then, my husband and I went to dinner at Yard House in VA Beach for date night last Wednesday.? Neither of us are big starch eaters, so when he left his rice virtually uneaten on his plate, I asked the server to wrap it up along with all of the left-over greens from my very dull salad.? (I had eaten the cucumber and shredded carrots off of it, but that was about all?thank goodness for the very tasty hummus appetizer!)

So, absolutely starving yesterday after my morning yoga class, I remembered all of these ingredients, along with?the coconut milk in the fridge leftover from my Spicy Vegan ?Beef? and Zucchini Stew).? And, in just a few minutes, this mouth-watering dish was born.? It doesn?t have a lot of protein, yet it is filling.? So, I would probably enjoy it with a glass of soymilk and call it a meal.

2 acorn squash (about 1 pound each), cut in half horizontally, seeds and membrane removed with a spoon

1 tablespoon olive oil + additional for oiling baking dish and basting squash

1 medium onion, cut into 1/4-inch dice

Sea salt

4?large cloves of garlic, minced

4 cups mixed greens, large leaves torn if necessary (e.g. baby spinach, arugula, etc.)

Approximately 1/2 cup coconut milk (or other vegan creamer with a low sugar content)

Freshly ground black pepper

2 cups cooked brown rice

Garnish: approximately 12 smoked almonds

?Preheat oven to 400 degrees and lightly oil a baking sheet.? Place sqaush halves, cut side up, in a roasting pan.? Brush lightly with olive oil and sprinkle very lightly with sea salt.? Roast in the center of the oven for 45 to 60 minutes or unil tender, yet still firm enough to hold its shape.

After about 30 minutes of roasting, begin casserole.? In a large skillet (cast iron is always be preference), heat tablespoon of olive oil until shimmering.? Add onion and a pinch of salt,?and saute, stirring frequently, about 3 minutes or until onion is softened.? Add garlic and saute, stirring, another 30 seconds to 1 minute.? Add greens and saute, stirring, until wilted, but still bright green, about 2? minutes or so.? Stir? in coconut milk, black pepper, and cooked rice.? Check for salt and stir in more if necessary.? Continue cooking, lowering heat if necessary, until flavors marry and mixture is heated through.? Add additional coconut milk if necessary to reach desired consistency, which should be quite thick, like an oven-baked casserole.? When squash has finished cooking, fill each half with one-fourth of the casserole.? Garnish each with 3 smoked almonds and serve immediately.

Video: Puppies don't pick up on yawns

Wednesday, October 24, 2012

Do you get tired when others yawn? Does your dog get tired when you yawn? New research from Lund University establishes that dogs catch yawns from humans. But not if the dogs are too young. The study, published in Springer's journal Animal Cognition, found that, like humans, dogs show a developmental trend in susceptibility to contagious yawning.

While dogs above seven months of age catch human yawns, younger dogs are immune to yawn contagion.

Contagious yawning is not just a sign of sleepiness or boredom. Previous research has shown contagious yawning in humans, adult chimpanzees, baboons and dogs, and suggests that it can be used as a measure of empathy. Empathy, mimicking the emotional responses of others, is difficult to measure directly, but contagious yawning allows assessment of a behavioral empathetic response, the researchers say.

While the development of contagious yawning in human children has seen much research, this is the first study to investigate its development in another species.

Elainie Alenk?r Madsen, PhD, and Tomas Persson, PhD, researchers at Lund University, engaged 35 dogs in Denmark, aged between four and 14 months, in bouts of play and cuddling and observed the dogs' responses when a human repeatedly yawned or gaped or performed neither of the two expressions. Only dogs above seven months of age showed evidence of contagious yawning.

This pattern of development is consistent with that in humans, who also show a developmental increase in susceptibility to yawn contagion, with children typically beginning to yawn contagiously at the age of four, when a number of cognitive abilities, such as accurate identification of others' emotions, begin to clearly manifest. One interpretation that Madsen and Persson suggest is that the results reflect a general developmental pattern, shared by humans and other animals, in terms of affective empathy and the ability to identify others' emotions. Given that contagious yawning may be an empathetic response, the results suggest that empathy and the mimicry that may underlie it develop slowly over the first year of a dog's life.

This video clip shows puppy with a familiar experimenter and an unfamiliar experimenter. Credit: Elainie A. Madsen

There was some evidence that the researchers may have transferred the emotion that yawning reflects (sleepiness) to the dogs, as nearly half of the dogs responded to yawning with a reduction in arousal, to the extent that the experimenter needed to prevent a number of dogs from falling asleep.

Research with adult humans and other primates suggest that individuals are more likely to yawn contagiously to those with whom they have close emotional bonds. Madsen and Persson tested the dogs with both an unfamiliar experimenter and their owner, but found no evidence that the puppies preferentially yawned in response to the yawns of the human with whom they were emotionally close. Since this is also the case for young human children, the researchers suggest that in species that show an empathy-based social modulatory effect on contagious yawning, this behavior only emerges at later stages of development.

GOP Senate candidate's comments on rape, pregnancy spark furor

Indiana Republican Senate candidate Richard Mourdock said pregnancies resulting from rape are part of God's plan, tearfully explaining that he only supports abortions when a mother's life is in danger.

"I think even when life begins in that horrible situation of rape, that it is something that God intended to happen," Mourdock said during Tuesday's Senate debate, choking up. Mourdock's opponent, Democratic Rep. Joe Donnelly, opposes abortion except in cases of rape and incest.

After the debate, Mourdock further explained his comment.

"Are you trying to suggest somehow that God preordained rape, no I don't think that," said Mourdock, according to The Associated Press. "Anyone who would suggest that is just sick and twisted. No, that's not even close to what I said."

Democrats wasted no time linking GOP presidential hopeful Mitt Romney to Mourdock. Earlier this week, Romney personally appeared in a TV ad for the Indiana state treasurer, offering his endorsement.

"Richard Mourdock's rape comments are outrageous and demeaning to women. Unfortunately, they've become part and parcel of the modern Republican Party's platform toward women's health, as Congressional Republicans like Paul Ryan have worked to outlaw all abortions and even narrow the definition of rape," Democratic National Committee Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz said in a statement released to press.

"As Mourdock's most prominent booster and the star of Mourdock's current campaign ads, Mitt Romney should immediately denounce these comments and request that the ad featuring him speaking directly to camera on Mourdock's behalf be taken off the air," she added

"Mitt's man Mourdock apes Akin, reflecting a GOP that is way out of mainstream," Obama strategist David Axelrod tweeted.

Romney's campaign distanced itself from Mourdock's comment.

"Gov. Romney disagrees with Richard Mourdock's comments, and they do not reflect his views," campaign spokeswoman Andrea Saul said.

Abortion has become a more prominent issue in the presidential campaign in recent weeks, as Mitt Romney told the Des Moines Register that he would not pursue any specific abortion legislation as president and began airing a new TV ad in which a woman touts Romney's support for abortions in cases of rape and incest-a difference of opinion between Romney and his running mate, Paul Ryan.

The Obama campaign hit Romney on abortion soon after, releasing a TV ad of its own that features footage from a 2007 GOP presidential primary debate in which Romney said he would be "delighted" to sign a bill banning all abortions in the U.S.

Missouri Senate candidate Rep. Todd Akin said during an interview in August that women's bodies have ways of preventing pregnancy in cases of what he called "legitimate rape." Akin apologized for the comment, but refused to leave the race despite pressure from his own party.

ABC News' Elizabeth Hartfield and David Muir contributed to this report.

Self-powered sensors to monitor nuclear fuel rod status

ScienceDaily (Oct. 23, 2012) ? Japan's Fukushima Dai'ichi nuclear disaster that occurred in 2011 -- a result of the strongest earthquake on record in the country and the powerful tsunami waves it triggered -- underscored the need for a method to monitor the status of nuclear fuel rods that doesn't rely on electrical power.

During the disaster, the electrical power connection to the nuclear reactor failed and rendered back-up electrical generators, coolant pumps, and sensor systems useless. The nuclear plant's operators were unable to monitor the fuel rods in the reactor and spent fuel in the storage ponds.

To address this issue, Penn State researchers teamed with the Idaho National Laboratory to create a self-powered sensor capable of harnessing heat from nuclear reactors' harsh operating environments to transmit data without electronic networks. The team will present their research at the Acoustical Society of America's upcoming 164th Meeting, October 22-26, 2012, in Kansas City, Missouri.

"Thermoacoustics exploits the interaction between heat and sound waves," explains Randall A. Ali, a graduate student studying acoustics at Penn State. "Thermoacoustic sensors can operate without moving parts and don't require external power if a heat source, such as fuel in a nuclear reactor, is available."

Thermoacoustic engines can be created from a closed cylindrical tube -- even a fuel rod -- and a passive structure called a "stack."

"We used stacks made from a ceramic material with a regular array of parallel pores that's manufactured as the substrate for catalytic converters found in many automotive exhaust systems. These stacks facilitate the transfer of heat to the gas in a resonator, and heat is converted to sound when there's a temperature difference along the stack," Ali elaborates.

When a thermoacoustic engine operates, an acoustically driven streaming gas jet circulates hot fluid away from the heat source -- nuclear fuel -- and along the walls of the engine and into the surrounding cooling fluid.

Penn State and Idaho National Laboratory are also investigating using thermoacoustic sound to monitor microstructural changes in nuclear fuel, measure gas mixture composition, and to act as a failsafe device in emergency situations.

Popular Culture and the 'Language' of Shoes Come Together in 'Mockups' New Art Toy Designed to Stimulate, Educate and Inspire

Shoe-Inspired Art Toy Lets Kids 'Design' Themselves and Share Their Unique Style Via GetMockups.com Launching on October 24

Seattle, Washington (PRWEB) October 24, 2012

Shoes have the power to define a generation. In the 1980s, many teens scribbled designs on their canvas tennis shoes to express their individual style. Run DMC did it with their signature Adidas shell tops. Nirvana's hand-scrawled Converse are unforgettable. What about Dorothy's red shoes or Cinderella's glass slipper? Even the shoe thrown at President George W. Bush on his farewell visit to Iraq in 2008 is significant. Over the last few decades, hand-decorated shoes have moved beyond the traditional iconic image of rebellion against mainstream culture to take on another significance--the universal symbol for movement and identity. Growing pains are ever-present in a world that struggles to understand and accept its rapidly growing complexity.

The journey to self-discovery was difficult for Louie Gong, a self-taught artist, educator and activist from the Pacific Northwest. Gong is Native American (Nooksack) as well as Chinese, French and Scottish. He has had a very personal experience with learning how to "design" and define himself as the world catches up with that growing complexity. Inspired by his passion for youth development and education, Gong is launching Mockups ($24.95 retail), a new shoe-inspired vinyl art toy and its interactive Web site http://www.getmockups.com on October 24.????

?Mockups are about deciding who you want to be,? said Louie Gong, artist and founder of Eighth Generation, LLC. ?In a world where kids are bombarded with messages that tell them they should be like somebody else, Mockups encourage kids to explore their uniqueness. I?m excited to bring to market a values-based product built on real experience working with kids and the increasing role and importance of the Internet in education."

Gong vividly remembers his childhood when the idea of owning a pair of Van's seemed unattainable because of cost and the perception that he would be viewed strangely in the small community where he grew up. A lot has changed since 1984. Fashion has moved beyond the rebelliousness of disaffected youth to a tool for embracing multiculturalism in most everything we put on our bodies--from clothing to jewelry to shoes. At age 35, Gong finally purchased his first pair of Van's. When he couldn't find the design that suited his personality and tastes, Gong made his own designs on the shoes. That was the birth of his company Eighth Generation, LLC, and for the last three years he has created hundreds of custom shoes that merge traditional Native American (Coast Salish) art with influences from his mixed heritage and popular culture. The demand for his work, even at $300-$350 per pair, has significantly increased, especially after selling out at the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics. Gong currently has a two-year waiting list for his original work.

So why are mockups cool? Reminiscent of other pop culture vinyl art toys, Mockups, which measure 6" tall and come in a colorful and appealing shoe box:

The best part of Mockups is the educational value. They are perfect for engaging kids in the classroom as well. Mockups has drawn from popular culture and the cross-cultural symbolism of shoes to create engaging lesson plans that are aligned with national learning standards.

Mockups are available for purchase on the site http://www.getmockups.com, which also provides information on retail. Budding shoe artists can also get design tips and watch how-to videos. Once people have finished their Mockups, they can also go on the Mockups site and upload photos to share their designs with the world. They can also browse and rate the designs of others. To be inspired by Mockups and meet Louie Gong, watch a brief teaser at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NXFknBppMrk&sns=fb.

About Mockups and Eighth Generation, LLC:

Mockups were created by Louie Gong, founder of Seattle-based Eighth Generation, LLC. Gong is a self-taught artist, educator and activist who was raised in the Nooksack tribal community located in Whatcom County, Washington. He is widely known for using his custom shoe designs, which merge influences from his mixed heritage (Nooksack, Chinese, French and Scottish), to make powerful statements about identity. Gong created Mockups to make the experience of personalizing shoes less expensive and intimidating. Eighth Generation's mission is to make cool stuff with educational value. http://www.eighthgeneration.com

Jefferson County ballot accidentally asks voters to pick a president of the Untied States

Jefferson County ballot accidentally asks voters to pick a president of the Untied States

PORT TOWNSEND ? Jefferson County voters are casting their ballots for ?President/Vice President of the Untied States.?

?Yes, it's a typo,? lamented County Auditor Donna Eldridge.

Eldridge and her staff didn't notice the mistake until it was brought to her attention Tuesday by the Peninsula Daily News, which had been alerted by a Port Townsend voter earlier in the day.

The mistake appears on 22,596 ballots that were sent out to voters last Wednesday.

As of Tuesday afternoon, 2,901 had been returned in the all-mail election that ends at 8 p.m. Nov. 6.

?We went over this several times with five staff members, but somehow this one got through,? Eldridge said.

Proofreading is done by teams, with one reading ballot language to the other.

Eldridge said the mistake will not cause confusion or affect the voting process since, as ?with many words, it doesn't matter as long as you have the first letters and the last letters spelled right, people know what you mean.?

Eldridge doesn't think this is the worst ballot mistake to originate from her office.

That distinction is earned by the misspelling of the word ?superintendent? for the office of superintendent of public instruction a few years ago.

Then there was the time when a Superior Court judge race was omitted from the ballot.

Eldridge said no one had alerted her to this year's misspelling but heard from voters who thought the president's race was not included on the ballot.

That confusion resulted from state law that requires initiatives to be listed first on the ballot.

Many voters think that the president's race is the most important contest and should be listed first.

?I'm glad you brought this to us on a Tuesday instead of a Friday,? she said, ?because it would have ruined our weekend.?

?This way, we can just think about it a bit and say, 'Hey, we're human.'?

UBS found 3 other unauthorized trading incidents, court told

LONDON (Reuters) - UBS managers have sacked two traders involved in unauthorized trading incidents unrelated to accused fraudster Kweku Adoboli, a London court heard on Thursday.

In a separate strand of evidence heard at Adoboli's trial, the jury heard that an internal UBS probe into his trades had found "strong evidence of collusion at local desk level".

Adoboli, 32, faces two counts of fraud and two of false accounting, which he denies. He has been blamed for losses of $2.3 billion that were announced on September 15, 2011, the day he was arrested.

Information about three separate and previously unheard-of unauthorized trading incidents emerged during the cross-examination of Colin Bell, UBS's global head of operational risk control.

Without disclosing details of the three incidents or revealing when they occurred, Bell told the court that two out of the three traders concerned had been dismissed. The third still worked at the Swiss bank.

The matter was raised by Adoboli's defense lawyer Charles Sherrard as part of a broader strategy to present UBS as a bank with sloppy compliance systems.

Asked whether the incidents that had led to the two dismissals had resulted in losses to the bank, Bell said there had been "an element of restating of perceived profit and loss".

Bell added that he would "draw a distinction" between the three incidents and the case of Adoboli.

He said that one example of an incident that would be termed "unauthorized trading" could be where someone mandated to trade a particular product had traded a different one.

Bell said this did not "fall into the same bucket" as the Adoboli case, in which the core accusation is that the trader exceeded his risk limits and concealed his huge, unhedged positions with fictitious bookings.

Citing a document by KPMG, the auditors who investigated events at Adoboli's Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) desk, Sherrard said UBS had alerted the Swiss and British financial regulators about the three incidents.

UBS as well as the regulators had asked KPMG not to assess the three incidents as part of their in-depth probe into the Adoboli case, the KPMG document said.

17 COMPLIANCE EMAILS IGNORED

Earlier in Thursday's hearing, Sherrard read out excerpts from an internal UBS report, dated December 9, 2011, on what had gone wrong on the ETFs desk.

"The supervision of the ETFs trading activity ... was ineffective," the report said.

"A director-level peer of Kweku Adoboli was allocated supervisory responsibility for the desk and their mutual line manager was based in the U.S.," it said.

This was a reference to John Hughes, the other senior trader on the ETFs desk, and John DiBacco, the New York-based manager who took over responsibility for the London-based desk in April 2011.

Both Hughes and DiBacco were dismissed from UBS in the wake of Adoboli's arrest, and both have appeared as witnesses at his trial.

"The supervisor (Hughes) had never completed supervisory training despite being invited to attend 17 times by compliance," the internal report said.

"Nevertheless, there is strong evidence of collusion at local level ... The local supervisor was aware of Mr Adoboli's propensity to smooth profit and loss and to take unacceptably high levels of net delta (risk)," it said.

Adoboli's defense team have argued that he believed he was acting for the good of the bank and that others, especially Hughes, knew what he was doing and were complicit to a certain extent.

The prosecution has presented him as a lone "rogue trader", out of control and out for himself.

The trial continues.

Revocable Trust Planning Thwarts Creditors - Washington Estate ...

Sometimes you may hear ?revocable trusts
provide no asset protection? ? now you know that is only half-true.

Trusts are powerful devices. In
fact, even ?revocable? trusts can afford valuable protection. Consider the case
of Frank and Geryl Pearl, as reported in a recent Forbes article titled ?Pearl -- Transfers to Revocable Trusts Were
Not Fraudulent Transfers As To Creditors Of The Settlor
.?

Essentially, the Pearl case
illustrates the magic of a revocable trust. Frank, upon a cancer diagnosis,
moved his business assets under a revocable trust, which meant that he was
still effectively accountable for everything because the ?revocable? trust was
still under his control for all intents and purposes. Frank arranged for the
bank to name him personally as guarantor to the business loans. Geryl was named
beneficiary to the trust. When Frank died, the assets in the trust that were
otherwise entirely accessible to the bank and other creditors passed over to
Geryl and were completely inaccessible to the creditors. Poof! How did this
happen? As summarized by Forbes:

?It should not be overlooked that a revocable trust can
provide near-absolute asset protection to the beneficiaries of the trust after
the settlor dies, so long as the trust is well-drafted, has only discretionary

Wrongful Death Kentucky Toddler Death in TX UPDATE | Liar ...

There is a disturbing update to a case involving the death of a Kentucky toddler in Texas.

According to the Houston Chronicle, Child Protective Services closed a neglect case involving the toddler just days before she died without even making a visit to the family?s home. 22-month-old Tamryn Klapheke of Scott County died in August after found living in deplorable conditions. Her mother, Tiffany Klapheke, is charged in the death.

http://liarcatchers.com/wrongful_death.html

The paper reports that six days before officers were called to the home, a supervisor with Texas Child Protective Services hastily and quietly closed an 11-month neglect investigation involving the toddler without making a required final visit to the home. In fact, the last visit CPS made was nearly a year before the toddler?s death.

During that time, a lot changed. Klapheke had a baby, was hired and fired from her job and had to say goodbye to her husband, who was deployed to Aghanistan.

The Abilene Police Department is now investigating the local CPS office for a backlog of delinquent cases which may have sat unchecked far too long before it was too late. The Chronicle also reports a second toddler died of a heart defect as her case sat on a CPS worker?s desk while waiting to be transferred to a social worker who could find her at home care.

Sorry Single People, Being In A Relationship Is Actually Awesome ...

Hi, single people!

I know you?ve heard the rumors ? that being in a relationship is actually all it?s cracked up to be. And I hate to be the bearer of bad news? oh, who am I kidding? I LOVE being the bearer of bad news. Relationships are awesome!

Okay, not all relationships are awesome. Some are boring, some are car crashes, and some are like an acclaimed foreign film that everyone pretends to ?get? so that they don?t have to hear any more about how deep/ interesting/ wonderful it is. It?s true that it?s better to be alone than in a bad relationship. But there?s nothing in the world like a good one.

For some of us, nothing feels more urgent than loving another person. Nothing comes more natural, nothing is more fulfilling, and nothing puts a smile on our faces like waking up next to the warmth of another body. Not just any body, either. A body whose curves we know, whose flaws we memorize, whose touch calms and ignites us all at once. The body that walks next to us, envelopes us when we?re cold, and doesn?t shrink away from our feet or our feelings. For people like us, being in a solid relationship is better than any high. And it?s definitely better than a score of horrifying OKCupid dates.

I think the general argument in favor of being single is that you?re 100% autonomous and independent. But that?s not actually true, is it? Because most people have friends. Or a family. You probably have a job. Maybe some debt. You have things and people to whom you?re obliged on some level, unless you?re a total sociopath or the Unabomber. Being a member of society means compromising. Life is about compromising, about picking battles. You can?t escape that, relationship or not.

It seems to me that most people have no problem compromising in their everyday lives and yet! When it comes to romantic relationships, chronically single people pull the independence card. They do the ?I?m not willing to sacrifice XYZ? dance. But if you equate relationships with sacrificing what?s important to you, you?re in the wrong relationship. Relationships aren?t about sacrifice. (Even someone who isn?t willing to ?sacrifice? their right to sleep around can land themselves a healthy, open relationship). There?s a distinction between the right person and the right relationship ? they aren?t the same thing. The right relationship won?t ask you to sacrifice parts of yourself.

No friends, relationships are about compromise. They?re about giving and taking without keeping track, without wanting to keep track. They?re human connections, not a bar tab. This is what makes a good relationship the legitimate best thing in the world. You can?t fake or force a human connection. You can?t travel the world in search of it, you can?t make a call and order it, you can?t take out your checkbook to solve the problem (but that?s probably because no one uses checks anymore). Love is bigger than you.

My point is this: you can always live with yourself. That?s basic. That?s how you came into this world. What you can?t do is make love spring from thin air. What you can?t do is control how someone else feels. All you can do is be yourself, be open, be hopeful. You can fall, you can fail, and you can recover. You can test your strength time and time again, not by hiding under a shroud of independence but by not being afraid to open up and potentially get hurt. Relationships are every bit about testing and reassessing your own character as they are about the bond you have with another person.

Relationships make you a little more selfless, a little more considerate. They introduce you to world views you may have not considered before. Relationships are an invitation to experience life through someone else?s filter on the most intimate level possible. You can be as independent and free as you want, but knowing how and when to compromise is an integral part of being a human being. And there is no better teacher than the relationship.

The right relationship won?t stop you from discovering the world or yourself. It will motivate you. It will challenge you and inspire you. Of course, it?s great to be able to motivate on your own ? I would argue that it?s necessary ? but when you?re done conquering the world for the day, wouldn?t you rather spend your nights next to someone who loves you? TC mark

Intuitive Surgical procedure growth disappoints

(Reuters) - Intuitive Surgical Inc on Tuesday lowered its full-year forecast for procedure growth after posting a disappointing growth rate of 22 percent for surgeries using its high-priced da Vinci robots in the third quarter.

Intuitive's shares dropped more than 4 percent after it reported its third quarter results.

The company said it now expects 2012 procedure growth of 24 percent, down from its prior view of 25 percent to 27 percent.

Intuitive said the slower growth was due to spending constraints in Europe and a slowdown in U.S. prostate surgeries, and it reiterated that it sees those trends persisting through the year. It said procedure growth, which came in below its own expectations, was propped up somewhat by gains in gynecological and other surgeries.

However, Intuitive said it now sees full-year revenue growing at the upper half of its previous forecast of 20 percent to 23 percent.

"What was different this quarter relative to our expectations was that they were much worse in terms of their original business of prostatectomies in the U.S.," said Canaccord Genuity analyst Jason Mills.

The company said the downturn in U.S. prostatectomies was due in part to a trend toward less frequent prostate cancer screenings. In addition, recent studies have suggested that many prostate surgeries may be delayed or are unnecessary as many men with prostate cancer are more likely to die of something other than the disease.

The company believes many delayed prostate surgeries will eventually translate into future Intuitive business.

"At some point DVP (da Vinci prostatectomies) will bottom out," said Mills, adding that growth in other types of procedures, including colon surgery and hysterectomies "was outstanding."

The company reported third-quarter profit only a bit higher than expectations, compared with its typical trend of sailing past Wall Street forecasts.

Excluding a one-time tax gain of about $38 million, Intuitive earned $3.54 per share, topping analysts' average expectations by 4 cents, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Third-quarter net profit rose to $183 million, or $4.46 per share, from $122 million, or $3.05 per share, a year ago.

Revenue rose about 20 percent to $538 million, primarily driven by the sale of 155 da Vinci systems at a cost of about $1.5 million each. That exceeded Wall Street estimates of $535.4 million.

The 155 da Vinci's sold - 79 of them to repeat customers - was up from 133 a year ago and 150 in the previous quarter. Only 13 of those were sold in Europe, down from 18 a year ago.

Procedure growth in Europe was an anemic 9 percent.

"Europe is going to be a headwind to many companies, including medical device companies that have a presence in Europe, just given the austerity measures there," Mills said.

One bright spot was Japan, where 16 da Vinci systems were sold in the quarter. Japan is considered an important new market for Intuitive that will grow as the company secures reimbursement for more procedures. It is currently only reimbursed for prostatectomies in Japan.

"Long term, we're really excited about the Japanese opportunities," Chief Executive Gary Guthart said on a conference call with analysts.

Instruments and accessories sales for the quarter rose 24 percent to $218 million, while service revenue climbed 22 percent to $88 million.

Intuitive Surgical shares fell to $510 in extended trading from a Nasdaq close at $533.13, more than giving back the day's gains of 4 percent. Intuitive shares are up about 13 percent for the year.

Crowley's corrections highlight moderator role

(AP) ? Candy Crowley's signature moment as moderator of Tuesday's rough-and-tumble presidential debate came when she was called upon to referee a dispute over President Barack Obama's description of the attack on the U.S. Consulate in Libya as an act of terror.

When Republican Mitt Romney questioned whether the president had done so, Crowley said, "He did, in fact, sir."

"Can you say that a little louder, Candy?" Obama said, as the debate's audience broke into applause.

Similarly, there was applause when Crowley suggested that it also took others in the administration as much as two weeks to abandon the idea that the attacks were related to protests over an anti-Islam video.

"I was trying to bring some kind of clarity to the situation," Crowley said later. The CNN chief political correspondent was moderating her first presidential debate and was the first woman to do so in 20 years.

It was a town hall-style debate, with a panel of 82 undecided voters brought to a Long Island college stage to put questions to the two candidates.

Crowley was caught between trying to keep the candidates to time limits yet still being flexible enough not to cut off productive exchanges. The first debate moderator, PBS' Jim Lehrer, had received some criticism for not policing the debate. Online, Crowley was generally praised for her effort.

She succeeded the first time in stopping Romney from trying to get in some extra words, but not the second time. That led to some social media suggestions that Romney could be hurt by appearing to look disrespectful toward a woman. Later in the debate, however, Obama talked past Crowley's two attempts to cut short one answer.

She said later that she expected such push-back during the debate and that it didn't bother her.

"I don't take it personally at all," she said in a CNN interview. "I think the first part was fun to watch and I hope enlightening."

Social media participants also split across party lines regarding Crowley's intercession in the Libyan questions: Democrats hailed it, while many Republicans called it out of line.

Crowley's role as moderator had also been a subject of discussion before the debate even started. An agreement between the candidates about the debate circulated online, where it stated that the moderator would not be allowed to ask follow-up questions, or play any role other than to introduce questions and enforce time limits.

Crowley said that the candidates' agreement wouldn't stop her from asking follow-ups, and she did so during the debate.

"What about long-term unemployed?" she asked following the candidates' reply to the first question, from a college student who wondered if he would find a job after graduating.

She also tried to steer the candidates back to the subject when the answer appeared to be wandering, such as when Romney discussed American guns found in Mexico after being asked about an assault rifle ban.

Crowley also surprised some observers with her talkativeness before the debate. Late Monday, she appeared on CNN and was asked by Wolf Blitzer what Obama needed to do avoid a repeat of his first debate performance, widely considered poor.

It was a natural question for CNN's chief political correspondent, but maybe not for a day before a debate she was moderating.

By contrast, Lehrer, who is semi-retired, turned down requests for interviews a week before moderating the first presidential debate. ABC's Martha Raddatz, who oversaw the vice presidential debate, also did not talk publicly about the debate beforehand. CBS News' Bob Schieffer, who is moderating the final presidential debate next week, has purposely stayed away from CBS' coverage of the first three debates to avoid being put in a position of commenting on the candidates.

KCET in Los Angeles, noncom satellite Link TV announce merger ...

KCET, the Los Angeles public TV station that split from PBS nearly two years ago, is merging with Link TV, the noncommercial national satellite broadcaster that specializes in international news and documentary programming.

The boards of KCET and San Francisco-based Link TV approved the Jan. 1, 2013, merger on Tuesday morning. No money was involved in the deal.

Jerome (Photo: KCET)

The new nonprofit, KCETLink, will have one board and management team but continue to distribute programming under their established brands. ?Jerome will be chief executive officer of KCETLink, with Link TV President Paul Mason serving as chief strategy officer. Both will be based at KCET headquarters in Los Angeles.

Staff and operations will be consolidated, Jerome said, with KCET taking on ?a significant number? of Link?s 40 employees, for a total of around 150 staffers. ?As with any merger situation, we?ll be taking a look? at possible restructuring or layoffs, he said. Employees will work for both entities.

As KCETLink, both media outlets gain new distribution platforms for their programs. Link TV, now available in 33 million households nationwide via the DirecTV and Dish satellite networks, will pick up some KCET programs and take over one of KCET?s three multicast channels in Los Angeles, gaining access to broadcast audiences in the nation?s second-largest market. KCET will air some Link TV news programs on its main channel.

Some episodes of SoCal Connected, KCET?s weeknightly newsmagazine, will be among the shows to run on Link TV?s schedule; those programs will be chosen based on their appeal to national audiences. KCET has yet to decide which of its three multicast channels will be dropped to make way for Link TV; it currently offers Kids & Family channel, V-me and MHz Worldview.

Paul Mason (Photo: Link TV)

Merger talks began ?serendipitously? about six months ago, Mason said, when leaders of the two organizations ?started to notice complementary factors? between them.

Public media needs to find more efficient and intelligent ways of operating, KCET President Al Jerome told Current, and that often means collaboration. ?By consolidating our workforces we came up with operating and financial efficiencies, at the same time taking advantage of our complementary strengths,? he said. ?As we walked down that road, we said, ?We have to be the architects of our own future.? The merger idea was the best solution.?

Jerome and Mason also have similar backgrounds: Jerome came to KCET in 1996 from a career in commercial broadcasting that included 17 years in NBC management; before Mason took over in September 2011 at Link TV, he was a senior v.p. of ABC News.

After selling its historic studios on Hollywood?s Sunset Boulevard to the Church of Scientology for $42 million, KCET moved into a new headquarters in Burbank in April.

With its new production facilities, Jerome said, KCET?s leadership ?felt we had real, significant production expertise to bring to bear to assist Link. And Link is doing a tremendous job in digital technology, so that?s complementary to us.?

Link carries global and national news, documentaries and international cultural programming. ?We came to see KCET?s relationship with the BBC, and the international programming they?ve been sharing both in news and entertainment, as having the same values that are important to our audience,? Mason said.

Today?s announcement is the latest of several program initiatives unveiled by KCET since its split from PBS in January 2011. The station retooled its lineup to feature international news programming, paired with popular British dramas offered by other distributors, such as Doc Martin. Deals aimed at expanding its own production output ? such as a $50 million partnership with a former Disney executive ? have been slow to bear fruit.

Link TV premiered on Direct TV nearly 13 years ago after the FCC required satellite broadcasters to set aside part of their spectrum for public-service purposes (Current, Dec. 13, 1999). Its parent organization, Link Media, was co-founded by the Independent Television Service, the Internews Network, and Internews Interactive; it operates Link TV as well as websites LinkTV.org, LinkNews and ViewChange.org, an advocacy storytelling site funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

Link Media is largely funded by a variety of philanthropic organizations including the Knight Foundation, the Wyncote Foundation, the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, the MacArthur Foundation and the Annenberg Foundation.

KCET?s operating budget for 2011-12 is $33.7 million; Link TV?s is about $8 million.

First Dogs: A Look at Presidential Pets | Pets Best Insurance Blog

Po Obama currently lives in the White House. With the presidential race in full swing and November quickly approaching, the White House is on a lot of Americans? minds. Regardless of who takes office for the next term, one thing will remain constant; dogs will continue to be a part of the White House and a part of politics. The current First Dog is Bo (pictured here), a Portuguese Water Dog owned by the Obamas. And who can forget Gov. Romney?s family dog, Seamus, who rode on the roof of their car during vacations? Historically, presidential pets have had a place in the White House, and have even been thought to influence voters.

When President Franklin D. Roosevelt was running for re-election in 1944, he had been criticized for misusing tax payers? money following an incident where he sent a ship back from a family vacation to collect his dog, Fala. He is quoted as saying, ?You can criticize me, my wife and my family, but you can?t criticize my little dog. He?s Scotch and all these allegations about spending all this money have just made his little soul furious.?1 This speech was credited for turning the election in Roosevelt?s favor!

They way presidents have treated their pets has historically been a topic for political discussion and has often been a reflection of each presidents? image. Presidential hopefuls have long used pets in a political way, and their treatment of animals has influenced their images. President Nixon had been called a ?warm person? following his gift of a Cocker Spaniel dog named Checkers to his daughters. And then-presidential hopeful Herbert Hoover acquired a German Shepherd dog that he featured throughout his campaign as well. Mitt Romney?s incident with his dog Seamus on the roof of his car generated heat for the presidential hopeful in the early part of his campaign. Former President Lyndon Johnson?s image may have been hurt by his treatment of his Beagles, as a photo surfaced of him holding one of them by the ears. Although animal advocates criticized him for this and it influenced his image, the scandal ultimately didn?t hurt his presidency.2

Theodore Roosevelt was undoubtedly one of the most animal loving presidents in US history, owning many pets, including seven dogs, two cats named Tom Quartz and Slippers, a garter snake named Emily Spinach and Guinea pigs named Admiral Dewey and Fighting Bob Evans! Calvin Coolidge was another presidential animal lover, whose brood included 12 dogs, raccoons, a donkey named Ebeneezer, a plethora of exotic animals including a wallaby, black bear, a bob cat and lion cubs named Tax Reduction and Budget Bureau.

The most common breeds seen in the white house seem to be the hound (George Washington is rumored to have owned up to 18 hound dogs, possibly Fox Hounds), Spaniels (George H.W. Bush had two Spaniels; ?Millie? even wrote a book!), Collies (Calvin Coolidge had three named Rob Roy, Ruby Rough and Bessie), and the most popular breed of all is the Scottish Terrier. Four Scottish Terriers have called the White House home in the past 80 years. (George W. Bush had two named Miss Beazley and Barney).

While politics change and presidents come and go, one thing seems to be consistent and bipartisan: the White House continues to welcome furry four-legged members of presidents? families, and the public continues to take interest in the cats and dogs that hold the First Pet title.
