DETROIT ? Gibbs Sports Amphibians announced that its amphibious Quadski will be available this November for about $40,000.
The Quadski is a high-speed amphibious ATV that can reach speeds of 45 mph on land and water, transitioning between the two travel modes in a mere 5 seconds. The 1,300-pound vehicle has been in development by Gibbs for over 15 years, and cost more than $200 million to get to this point of production.
Alan Gibbs, a New Zealand businessman and founder of the firm, says that the one-person sport craft will go on sale next month in Florida. Some of the high-speed amphibian features include a 1.3-liter 175-horsepower BMW motorcycle engine and transmission, retractable wheels, 15-gallon fuel tank and the choice between red, blue, yellow, silver and black colored exterior.
This is not the firm's first amphibious vehicle to enter production; Gibbs attempted to release a larger amphibious sports car called the Aquada in 2003 that did not meet United States environmental and safety standards, but passed European requirements. It stopped being produced when the Land Rover-sourced V6 engine that powered it was no longer available.
The company says the vehicle will be built in an Auburn Hills, Michigan plant and it plans to establish more than 20 dealership locations in the next 12 months. Production estimates for the first year stand at 1,000 units.
Gibbs plans to release the Quadski in foreign markets sometime in 2014.
Edmunds says: Gibbs enters uncharted space with its Quadski amphibious vehicle. We will see if there is actual demand for the quirky-looking craft.
