Abstract:
A domestically-fabricated Fluorescent Molecular Tomography (FMT) device which helps molecular imaging of animals was unveiled in Iran Nano 2012 festival and exhibition held in Tehran earlier this month.

"Today, the state of the art regarding the diagnosis of cancers is focused on tumor identification on sub-cellular scales. Through this technique, the patient-borne cost of the treatment is cut down and the cure success rate is increased considerably. Accordingly, we were highly determined to develop this instrument in order for localization of cellular diagnostics technology in Iran," Dr. Marjaneh Hejazi, a research expert with Tajhizavaran Noori Pars Co. (the company which has developed the device), told INIC.

Dr. Hejazi underlined that the development of novel nanodrugs entails extensive and careful analyses which can prove their safety to be used for treatment of human beings, and said, "In vivo experiments on mice are a common practice in this context. Hence, the FMT system allows for a thorough investigation of the probable side-effects during the research phase of a nanodrug development program."

Concerning cancers, the FMT device enables characterization of tumors in addition to identification of their locations within the body. Consequently the metastasis, or the spread of cancer to other parts of the body, can be monitored thanks to this technology.

As for neurological disorders, the molecular imaging plays a prominent role in diagnosis, classification and treatment appraisal, too.

The research expert of the project stated that the fabrication of this promising device has taken roughly 24 months. According to Dr. Hejazi, there is only one foreign equivalent for this imaging system whose operation mechanism is far different than that of developed by the Tajhizavaran Noori Pars Co.
